On his final day in Israel, President Bush toured Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Shimon Peres joined the president. (Transcript)

From there the president traveled to Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee, following in the footsteps of Christ as he visited the House of St. Peter and the Church of the Beatitudes.

Ed Gillespie: The President had fun on the tour, laughing with the nuns so often I joked with Chief of Staff Josh Bolten I was worried someone’s knuckles were going to get smacked with a ruler!

There was a farewell ceremony at Ben-Gurion International Airport as President Bush boarded Air Force One. He said that he would return to Israel in May to celebrate the country’s 60th anniversary.

During the flight to Kuwait, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke to the press aboard Air Force One. (Transcript)

Q: So do you have any announcement of where we're going? Anything special?

Secretary Rice: We're going to Kuwait. (Laughter.)

The Kuwaitis rolled out their own red carpet for President Bush as he arrived in Kuwait City. The president met with leaders there and spoke to them about Iran and the need to keep that country from developing a nuclear weapon.

Hey you guys. This is the first time I have ever seen a Marine detail, in dress uniforms, standing with the President at an overseas event like this. What’s the story?

President George W. Bush makes a brief statement after his visit Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority, in Jerusalem. Standing with him from left are: President Shimon Peres, left, of Israel; Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, of Israel, and Avner Shalev, Chairman of Yad Vashem Directorate.

President Bush: Mr. President and Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for your wonderful hospitality. I would hope as many people in the world would come to this place, it would be a sobering reminder that evil exists and a call that when we find evil we must resist it. It also is a -- I guess I came away with this impression, that I was most impressed that people, in the face of horror and evil, would not forsake their God, and in the face of unspeakable crimes against humanity, brave souls young and old stood strong for what they believe.

It's an honor to be here. It is a moving experience, and it is a living memory that is important. Thank you, sir.

President George W. Bush's signature is seen underneath a line he wrote reading 'God bless Israel', in the guest book of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem, Friday, Jan. 11, 2008.

Ed Gillespie: These actions [lighting the Eternal Flame and laying the wreath] and his thoughtful spontaneous remarks after signing the guest book provided some sense of catharsis for his quiet staff and others who toured the museum.

Ed Gillespie: From Jerusalem the President left for Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee and a visit to the House of St. Peter, then the nearby Mount of the Beatitudes. Both are administered by the Franciscan order of the Catholic clergy, who led the President on a tour of each site. At the Church of the Beatitudes, the President was greeted by a group of nuns who walked with him through the tour. The President had fun on the tour, laughing with the nuns so often I joked with Chief of Staff Josh Bolten I was worried someone’s knuckles were going to get smacked with a ruler!

The visits to these moving sites on our last day in Israel capped a very productive visit to the Holy Land.

President George W. Bush visits the ruins of Capernaum Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The site, inhabited from 150 BC to AD 750, is reported to have been the home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John, and according to the Book of Matthew, it was the town of Jesus, himself.
