Romney in Seven Words (Make all the promises you have to.)

On Wednesday, after his loss in the New Hampshire primary, Gov. Mitt Romney returned to Boston to lick his wounds and conduct a telephone fundraiser before heading off to his next must win state of Michigan. ABC Radio microphones were there and they featured an audio quote from Romney in their top of the hour news broadcasts. Romney was encouraging his phone bank volunteers with a little pep talk when he unintentionally summed up his entire campaign; ironically hitting upon the reason why he has failed to gain any traction with conservatives despite spending the most money of any Republican. ABC News Radio was contacted by telephone and confirmed the following quote from their report.

Hit the phones today make all the promises you have to, and…make sure that we get the funds that we need to keep on propelling this campaign forward with power and energy.

“Make all the promises you have to.”

That’s Romney in a nutshell. Of all the Republicans running, he alone has sought to clarify, cover, and indeed change past positions in an attempt to curry favor with conservatives. In the process, Romney has developed a reputation not as a principled conservative, but as a politician who will say almost anything and take almost any position to win votes.

This was underscored by the shift in his messaging following the Iowa caucuses, which Romney also lost. All of a sudden, after fashioning himself as the candidate of traditional conservative values, Romney became the agent of change. It was a poor attempt to model himself after a liberal Democrat, Barack Obama, and the "change" message that had carried him to victory in Iowa. Romney hoped to capture New Hampshire Republicans by emulating a liberal Illinois Democrat. “Make all the promises you have to.”

Fund raising is all about bringing in the bacon. I know one and he told me they all do basically the same thing.

They use every tactic they can think of.

The breath and length of the energy consummed by the left and the republican opposition to bring Romney down is truly amazing.

I’m sure no other candidate has given their callers a pep talk. /sarcasm

I hope it was recorded too, that way we’ll see he was joking. It was a peptalk to his phone bank workers!

Yep, he’s a true politician. He lies in every way possible. He and sKerry must wear the same size flip flopps.

sounds like a joke to me, easily ‘explainable’, but if it is actually verifiable, it WILL hurt him, maybe permanently, because it will keep getting repeated by his opponents. I can’t believe it wasn’t already today’s big news on cable, but this is the only place I heard it.

Don’t you think that if it did actually happen in that context it would be ALL OVER THE NEWS? It was levity, I even got a little chuckle out of it. Gees. As in, “vote twice.”

"I will admit that Mitt's attempts at humor are somewhat 1950's corny at times. Now if it were me, I would tell a joke about a Baptist, a Mormon, and John McCain walk into a bar... "

Now that is funny .

It was levity, I even got a little chuckle out of it. Geez!.... As in, “Get out there and vote often” with a smile!

If it wasn’t ABC would have it all over the news. Get a grip, people.

You will have to take my word for it. I couldn’t find it on ABC News’ site as well. Look, if this indeed happened, it would be all over the news, especially ABC. You’ve been wrongly (lack of a better word) reported to, people, by RedState.

Ok. Like I said, I've been previously suspicious that Gov. Romney would campaign in a matter that adheres precisely with this quote. Saying anything, pandering, and promising whatever it would take to get the Presidency. However, I don't believe in taking things out of context in order to take someone down. Unless other info comes out, I'll take your word that it wasn't more than just a joke. I still don't trust him, but this specific quote probably isn't much to make a fuss about.

Yet another disgusting thread by the hate Romney crowd. It really is disgusting, and you Freepers participating in this continual smear know it. Grow up and cut it out and be civil, if that is at all possible. Probably isn’t, as certain people like to wallow in the dirt.

And you apparently lack a sense of humor, also. It was a JOKE!!!

Isn't that how it works?

Context is everything. I agree that if this was not in jest, then this would have been splashed all over Drudge and everywhere else.

You would think this is the DU with the way some around here want to destroy Romney.

RIGHT——now that I think about it, I did hear McCain quote Mayor Daley, saying ‘vote EARLY AND OFTEN’——
i didn’t really think there was anything to it-—NO POLITICO on either side could be quite that stupid to let something like that out if it was ‘Serious’-—

I read that article and it was pretty cagey, but did not quote Romney. That was in quotes was a characterization of what the writer felt.

I read that pretty carefully. People see if you agree that there was no actual quote from Romney in that article.

???

It's right there near the beginning:

ABC News Radio was contacted by telephone and confirmed the following quote from their report.

"Hit the phones today make all the promises you have to, and…make sure that we get the funds that we need to keep on propelling this campaign forward with power and energy."

LET'S HEAR ABC Radio microphones TAPE?

So we can listen to the sound bite and hear the inflictions in the voice!
