Goodness sakes. Quick a silly reason not to support someone. I think Ham Radio people should be a bit more mature really.

Thanks for letting me post, even though I don’t own a ham radio....

It’s not about “sensitivity” “Stree_Lawyer”, it’s about people who don’t understand their job as an executive officer.

Compared to all of the issues to be wary of Mitt Romney, this is small. But, this does speak to either poor state planning in Mass., or then Gov. Romney's ignorance of their EMA.
Typically, Amateur Radio operators are involved in every disaster response and every disaster drill on the state level. A Governor ought to be aware of that.

See LLS? That’s the sort of thing I’m talking about. Understanding the role Amateurs play in such things and doing something to make it better for them, rather than dissing them.

BS... you must never have lived through an earthquake or hurricane and have a ham either get you medical help or let you alert family members across the country of your situation. It flies on the Space Station and the Military has used Ham Radio for years... Military Affiliated Radio Service... MARS for short. Ask a Nam Vet how important Ham Radio was in the jungle when they didn't have cell phones... and they still use it from remote areas... and it is a big part of Scientific communications based at the Poles.

“Some signs of a hidden addenda by the proponent:”
I caught all that stuff.
Still - shocks me that an ex governor would be this dismissive of hams.
They truly do the yeomans work.
To: Rick.Donaldson
Romney has shown himself a COMPLETE AND UTTER IDIOT if he thinks the personal ham radio operators are not very important for continued communcations in the event of a disaster.
They are the final line of communication when everything else goes down, and they take this role very seriously and in the event of an emergency are indeed on their horses so to speak to keep communcations going.
To anyone who understands the role of the HAM operator, Romney just had his Ducacus tank moment.
To: Rick.Donaldson
Right on. As a governor this shows a startling lack of understanding of the vulnerabilities of the communications infrastructure.

“This is a crock. I watched that segment. I am a Ham. But Romney was not dissing ham radio, he was simply discussing the changing capabilities of the State communication resources and the fact that the State can rely on their own systems for disaster communications.’
Citizens can’t rely on the state, though - which is why hams are so critical.
To: Rick.Donaldson
Rick, I think you are overreacting on this issue. Here is a more reasoned approach posted on the ARRL site where this article was sourced:
I think the Amateur Radio Community in Massachussets needs to do a better job of communicating their role and capabilities to the Governor in a non-adversarial way, but characterizing his comment as disrespectful isn't the best way to do it nor is a spontaneous e-mail barrage. If your goal is to increase the awareness of the Governor about the back-up capabilities of Amateur Radio in an emergency, then a reasoned and respectful approach by your section leadership officials should be your best approach. But if your goal is to annoy the Governor and have him really dismiss hams as bunch of kooks who overreact to a response to a left-field question, then by all means fire away with your e-mail barrage!

If you have policy differences with Mitt, fine. Voting against him because he does not understand Amateur Radio is foolish, IMO.
In fact, Mitt's church is very active in using Amateur Radio for emergency communications and public service. If you want an advocate for Amateur Radio, educate him.
Go Hunter (are you still there?), Go Fred (hello?), Go Mitt (if the above can't be seen).

It is not about HAMs themselves. It is about a critical element of disaster preparedness that as a govener he should be more aware of. If Bush was talking about Iraq and was dismissive of the AirForce efforts would that be an insult to a branch of the military or would that be a huge lack of understanding of something he should know about? This is like that. Trust me HAMs are CRITICAL in emergency situations. They have proven it time and time again in disasters of all kinds.

This candidate is obviously misinformed, lacks basic knowledge and doesn’t seem to have a clue here in regards to well established emergency communications.

Romney is clueless. Amateur radio is regularly used in municipal mass casualty exercises. what a dolt.

Okay that's a first for me. So, if someone is ignorant, they are a liar. Hmmmm. I had no idea that if someone does not understand something, that makes them a liar. I will try to remember that next time.
That's not what I said. Why don't you try actually READING what I said.
Don't get me wrong. I understand the benefits and position that ham radio has in this country and I may actually add this to the reasons I would, or would not, vote for someone.
Because of this, I will assume "You get it". I never said it was the ONLY reason I wasn't voting for him. You assumed that I think. It's A reason, but it's also an IMPORTANT reason, but again, let me reiterate and state, IT's NOT about ham radio, it's about 1) his ignorance, and 2) his refusal to admit his mistake and 3) his refusal to apologize.
It's PRINCIPLES again, and this is something many people just aren't getting. When you lie to someone and then expect them to vote for you -- then you're just an idiot. When you are IGNORANT and treat someone badly because you're ignorant, that's AKIN to lying to someone. Principles.

The point is that as a governor he should already know about it. The tone and content of his response indicates a complete lack of awareness. Not just a partial one. Of all people a GOVERNOR should know about disaster preparedness.

You can cancel out the person voting for him because he has nice hair.
Voting for McCain destroys what remains of our sovreignty!
I'd rather be waterboarded than vote for John McCain.

The responses to your posts who think this is about slighted hobbyists demonstrate a similar lack of understanding of what role HAMs play. As a kid with a fresh license, along with my family I participated in some disaster simulations. Lots of fun and very educational.
