Eek. Isn’t 7.0 + where you get a tsumani?
It depends on the slip direction of the fault. A lateral slip fault, like the San Andreas, is unlikely to cause a Tsunami. A dip slip fault, i.e. up and down relative motion, will cause a Tsunami if it occurs under water.
An earthquake greater than 9.0 happened in 1700 off the coast of Washington State.
It caused massive tsunamis along the coast of what is now Washington State and Oregon. The waves went far inland.
Tsunamis caused by this quake also wreaked havoc in Japan.
Someday, this is going to happen again....not a pleasant thought. (This happens every 400 - 500 years).
