Free Republic's (1/9) poll on Republican candidates' liberal positions that would be deal killers
Free Republic Poll ^ | 1/9/2008 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 01/09/2008 5:17:20 PM PST by Jim Robinson

(1/9) If the eventual Republican presidential nominee has a record including one or more of the following non-conservative positions, would you vote for him anyway or which item specifically would most likely be a deal killer?

Click on source link above to respond to the poll.

Three or more liberal positions on critical issues would definitely kill the deal in my book.

The way I see it:

X = Candidate holds or has record of non-conservative position. W = Weak or mixed positions.

Candidate Abortion/ Gay Rights Open Borders/ Amnesty Gun Control Tax and Spend Nanny Stater Untrustworthy Spinner
Flip flopper
Campaign Finance Reform

Giuliani X X X - - X X

Huckabee - X - X X X W

Hunter - - - - - - -

McCain W X W W W X X

Romney X X W W X X X

Thompson - - - - - - X

Thompson and Hunter are most conservative, but I prefer Thompson because Hunter's going to have a tough time making himself known and jumping from the House to the Presidency.

Please correct me where I'm wrong.

Great job Jim - definitely shows in black & white where the candidates stand! Fred’s my guy - the only one because Hunter just can’t get any traction.

I would suggest that anyone pledging to shut down Guantanamo and/or ban waterboarding is weak on defense, at least in that respect.

Fred was asked this question... He answered, “The question IS... will mccain endorse me”!

Rent the movie... It is a rendition of a comic series but the story is factual... and the heroic spirit of Victory is as accurate as can be conveyed in film. It also does not hurt seeing persians sliced and diced in huge numbers.

Example... Xerxis commands King Leonidas and the Spartans to surrender their arms. They were offered their lives and autonomy for Sparta and Leonidas was offered his crown to keep... all he had to do was agree to bow down on one knee and hail allegiance to Xerxis and to allow Xerxis to ravage the rest of Greece as he wished. He answered that his knees did not bend... and if Xerxis wanted their weapons... that they should come and take them. That is the spirit which filled Reagan when he battled the evil we face today.

Fred will not endorse mccain... at least I do not believe that he will. If he did, it would absolutely break the heart of every supporter that he has.

If Fred had been in the Senate, we would have sided with John Kyle and McCain, both his friends, and shoved immigration amnesty down our throats.

He most certainly would not have! He's absolutely against amnesty.

No patriotic could vote for Rudy. He is a pervert and a coward. It's really that simple.

Rudy, a talker not a fighter.

Interesting commentary.

unspun, I value your opinions and would be interested in what you have to say on what Rebekah brings up, as these are some concerns I have with Huckabee (commutations, stance on illegals, and, from what I’ve read before, a liberal bent on the issues).

I am less concerned with foreign policy, in general, because I think that is the least worrisome. There are people who know these things and can be relied upon for their expertise. Bush himself had no previous experience in foreign policy and that is, at least, one area where I won’t fault him (except for his “foreign policy” concerning Canada and Mexico and wanting to pander to Mexico).

I read with interest all the tax increases mentioned by another poster, and to which you responded. Until I read more on that, I cannot accept or dismiss either the charges leveled or the reasons to justify. (More reading ahead for me, it appears.)

Nothing is a “given” when doing polls such as this. Leaving out what a Democrat win will do to our military and the WOT, made the poll all about social issues. The fact is that our military is in harms way RIGHT NOW...fighting a war on many fronts. To pass THAT off as a “given” is a slap in the face to them all.

Thompson needs a “W” at the very least on the first two.

You are totally wrong

Securing our borders and enforcing immigration laws. Amnesty is not an option and the toleration of “sanctuary cities” must end.

Reviewing our immigration laws and policies to ensure they advance our national interests.

Uniting Americans by welcoming legal immigrants willing to learn English, assimilate into our communities, and become productive citizens.

How about a group of several co- Presidents who are assigned specific tasks? ... Why not?...We’ve been told by Hillary that such a thing was done before!

-Rudy and Hunter could have exclusive charge of the military, and nothing else.

-Ron Paul would be given exclusive charge of not selling this country out to Socialist Globalists.

-Romney could be placed in charge of an “on paper” department of all things squishy and floppy.

-McCainiac’s assignment would be solely as Court Jester, and a Ted Kennedy companion.

Huck could be given something to do.

And Thompson would be in charge of everything else, except free speech.

There are no Democrats listed in my table. We’re trying to select the best and most reliable all around conservative as the Republican nominee so we don’t have to suffer a democrat President. Most people on FR are conservatives, either socially, fiscally or defense wise or some combination thereof. Hopefully, most are conservative in all areas. Also, hopefully, we can land on a candidate who can pull all factions together with a minimum of deal killers that would cause big losses of one group or another.

At this moment, “I’ll vote ‘R’ regardless” leads barely ahead of “2 or more are deal-killers” followed by “3 or more are deal-killers”.

This would make me think that more FReepers than not will NOT be voting for the GOP nominee unless it’s Hunter or Thompson if they are being honest.

My honest assessment is that I could reluctantly vote for Giuliani, Romney or Huckabee with strong misgivings. I will not vote for McCain under any circumstances. The GOP might as well go out of business if they’re going to nominate Senator Judas.
