Evangelicals Against Mitt
The American Spectator ^ | 1/3/2008 | Carrie Sheffield

Posted on 01/08/2008 4:09:13 PM PST by tantiboh

Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.

The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.

...

THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.

...

ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."

...

Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.

...

The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.

Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

it is apparent from this thread that Mormons aren’t interested in YOU unless you are interested in adding credits to their go to heaven account by getting baptised.

Show the Doctrine of the Trinity being taught in the ancient church prior to when Constantine called his conference to establish the Official Roman Empire Church.

Did they just make it up as they went along at that conference?

To what conference in what year are you referring?

Cordially,

That is patently untrue, my friend. In fact, you’ll rarely find a religious belief system that is -more- inclusive of those outside its immediate number when it comes to the doctrines of salvation. Why, for example, would we so heavily stress the work we do in temples? We’re not doing it for us. We’re doing it for non-Mormons.

It is our doctrine - not my opinion, but our doctrine - that each person will be judged based on the desires of his heart and the degree of light and truth which he has. This applies to the devout Mormon, the good-hearted Baptist, and the ignorant bushman alike.

I do not understand where you could have perceived this notion about the LDS Church, but, please, disabuse yourself of it. It simply could not be further from the truth.

It is our doctrine - not my opinion, but our doctrine - that each person will be judged based on the desires of his heart and the degree of light and truth which he has.

Sighhh....

This post CAREFULLY omits the fact that in mormon doctrine ONLY THOSE WHO ACCEPT THE MORMON DEFINITION OF THE "GOSPEL" AND BECOME "MORMON WORTHY" WILL EVER BE ALLOWED TO JOIN GOD AND HIS SON IN THE "CELESTIAL" KINGDOM.

each person will be judged based on the desires of his heart and the degree of light and truth which he has...The highest degree of "light and truth" being the sole province of the LDS church.

Dear Reader: In order to reach the MORMON definition of the highest degree of light and truth, you MUST be baptized into the LDS church and perform required rituals in the LDS temple and you are NOT allowed into the LDS temple unless you pass the test of "mormon worthiness".

This post deserves the Four Pinocchios Award.

Some deplore Mormon influence, in Utah and in surrounding states where the Mormons are strong. But, heck, the Mormons were there first, even before the region was part of the United States. Indeed, they came to escape American persecution. More than a hundred years ago, they made peace with US authority, so they have earned their position.

"They were there first"....tell that to the American Indian tribes.

So your post means that in the states where the mormons weren't first, they don't deserve any influence? I'd agree with that. ;)

I see you didn't forget the card.

Indians nations didn’t respect the “first there” rule. For instance, the Apaches were dominant in western Texas until the Comanches descended on them and ran them off. If you are a “Lonesome Dover” fan you know that the Comanches were tough hombres who fought Texas to a standstill, and it wasn’t until W.T. Sherman got involved that they were finally whipped. Moral of the story: there is always someone tougher that you and you have to fight to hold the ground you gain.

Mister Huckabee will not end up with the Republican party nomination. He’s too liberal, more liberal than even Mitt Romney. McCain is insane, so he won’t get the nomination either. Ron Paul is certifiable, so he can’t be president. We are left with the distasteful choice of a Northeastern liberal who professes to be a changed man, conservative now. We shall see how long that last when he has to pander to the democrat controlled House and Senate in order to get along since tolerance of everything seems to be his mantra in one stealth manifestation or another.

That seems to indicate he will WIN against the Clinton Crime Machine and the media...I don't believe he will.

Why is it about the bit about fighting that you didn’t get? If you don’t fight, then you lose your throne.

I’m growing bored with you. I may yet respond to your posts, but don’t count on it. I suggest you find someone else to spray your spittle upon. Sometimes, it's all in the name...

Darth (Change of Dearth for the movie)
  1. an inadequate supply; scarcity; lack: There is a dearth of good engineers.
  2. scarcity and dearness of food; famine.
Vader (shortening of Evader for the movie)
  1. to escape from by trickery or cleverness: to evade one's pursuers.
  2. to get around by trickery: to evade rules.
  3. to avoid doing or fulfilling: to evade an obligation.
  4. to avoid answering directly: to evade a question.
  5. to elude; escape: The solution evaded him.
  6. to practice evasion.
  7. to elude or get away from someone or something by craft or slyness; escape.
Synonyms: avoid, dodge. escape. prevaricate, equivocate, fence

So you the name means Inadequate, lacking and trying to escape by prevaricating and being tricky.

Interesting Handle considering his posts, don't you think?

The complaint is that Mitt is an opportunist. Well, hard to predict how he would go. But events do matter. 9/11 shows how quickly things can turn about.

We will have no more dialog on this thread until you have read every single bit of information on those websites. Then the real debate will begin.

Please allow me to say that you are showing that you have a fundamental lacking in understanding how this (or any other forum on the Internet) works. You cannot force anyone to read your crap. If you want to take your ball and go home, then Go. The debate will continue without you and probably be better for it if that's your attitude. Actually, that is exactly what has bothered me about your posts. You like to write checks with your mouth that you just can't cash. Worse yet, you seem to know it and think that's cool. Now you want to say "The discussion stops until I get my way (pout, pout, stomps foot on floor). Such petty behavior should embarrass those on your side of the argument, and certainly is not winning you converts, so keep it up! (grin)

Considering your ban on discussion, and giving it all the due obedience it deserves, I am going to ask the following question...

Tant, tell me, when in your opinion did the Catholic church fall away from enough of the Gospel that they were apostate?

For me, having done the research about Arianism, and the works of Hippolytus, I think they still had some authority all the way up until the First council of Nicea in 325 AD.

Remember, Needy prevaricator can't respond because we have not read his excrement sites, so feel free and be frank.
