Evangelicals Against Mitt
The American Spectator ^ | 1/3/2008 | Carrie Sheffield

Posted on 01/08/2008 4:09:13 PM PST by tantiboh

Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.

The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.

...

THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.

...

ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."

...

Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.

...

The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.

Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

Has their dogma, in being raised to an importance above that of following Christ Himself, become their idol?

This is rich, coming from folks who rail that THEIR 'dogma' of the GODhead is the ONLY correct one!

Science just hasn’t yet figured out what the message being conveyed is saying.

Well I sure have!!

Romans 1:18-20
18. The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,
19. since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
20. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

A Minister once told me that he could kill me and he would still go to heaven, because he was born again.

Hmm...

King David killed somebody for their wife...

St. Paul killed folks who followed Jesus...

11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

We just won't allow them to VOTE against a Mormon without calling them names!!

The difference being, we don’t try to deny that you’re Christians on the basis of it. Unlike you, we’re perfectly happy to let those who disagree with us be.

I Said: This last is the real eye opener to me, if Satan Can Answer in God's stead and God can't stop him then that logically leads to some very disturbing conclusions. Think about it.

U Said: YOU should think about THAT!

With all your MIND and HEART!

I have, and it scares me to death to think you guys actually believe that Satan is more powerful than God.

  1. God has promised to answer us.
  2. God himself taught us to pray.
  3. God tells us to test the spirits
  4. God tells us how to tell if a spirit is from him.
If Satan can indeed answer a prayer to go, in God's stead:
  1. God is not all powerful, for Satan can stop him from answering our prayers.
  2. God is a Liar for He promised to answer a prayer of faith.
  3. God taught us something that leads us to sin making him the author of sin.
  4. God can't reliably communicate with us.
Conclusion? If Satan answers prayers to God then Satan is God, or there is no God and no Satan to answer the prayer either.

It's really simple Guys, either God is powerful enough to keep the promises he made in the Bible, or he is not. You say he is not, I say he is. I say if you believe that Satan answers prayers to God then you are not Christian, you are a Satan worshiper for you believe he is all powerful.

I have thought about it, and what you guys are saying scares the bejebers out of me... For you.

<NOT>[... Mormons teach that God the Father had sexual relations with Mary...]</NOT>

This is so old, I can't believe you guys still buy this stuff.

Go, Here for what we believe.

Since I know that many won't Go, I'll quote a bit from the source.
Critics claim that Latter-day Saints believe Jesus was conceived through sexual intercourse between God the Father and Mary, therefore Mary was not a virgin when Jesus was born. As evidence they point to a handful statements from early LDS leaders that directly or indirectly say so.
That would be the quotation you used...
Response
Latter-day Saints believe in the virgin birth.
As the Church responded to this question posed by Fox News:
The Church does not claim to know how Jesus was conceived but believes the Bible and Book of Mormon references to Jesus being born of the Virgin Mary.[1]
Anti-Mormons have forced this statement, and others like it, to mean that there was sex involved. Brigham Young was correct in that Jesus was literally physically the Son of God just as much as any children are "of our fathers," but it doesn't necessarily follow that the conception had to come about as the result of a sexual union. Science has discovered alternative methods of conceiving children that don't involve sex, so it is certainly not outside of God's power to conceive Christ by other means.

Ezra Taft Benson taught:
He was the Only Begotten Son of our Heavenly Father in the flesh—the only child whose mortal body was begotten by our Heavenly Father. His mortal mother, Mary, was called a virgin, both before and after she gave birth. (See 1 Nephi 11:20.)[3]
Benson's emphasis is on both the literalness of Jesus' divine birth, and the fact that Mary's virginal status persisted even immediately after conceiving and bearing Jesus.
Mormons do not use the words "immaculate Conception" only because people associate it with the doctrine of Perpetual virginity (which we don't believe either) and the assumption of Mary, Mary being born without original sin, etc all of which are not our Doctrine and are not biblical.

So, Like I said, Mormons do not believe that God had sex with Mary. We do believe that God is the Literal Father of Jesus, and that he acted through the Holy ghost in some way which has not been explained to us, but that Mary was still a virgin after she was pregnant, indeed, for at least a while after Jesus was born she was still a Virgin.

WOW, I've got to say, well said...

And thanks.

The important thing these threads should be showing people is now that Mitt is one of the top three contenders, people are less likely to tun blind eye to Mormon Bashing. The number of people posting and saying "they are not Momorn, but they don't like all the attacking" has gone way up. People should note the Basher are the ones getting posts saying they should shut up, Mormons are getting support from people who think this is ovet the top. This is what would happen if Mitt was the Nominee and Hitlery sent in the Goons.

Why can't YOU just POST it so the world can see where I am confused on the matter?

A Because it's long and I am trying to cut down the Size of my posts. B Because it's in index into other articles and would be a lot of work. Click the mouse button a few times, it won't hurt you.

It’s fairy logic, if any form of ‘logic’. If this process were so difficult to write, why copy so many chapters right out of the King James Bible, word for word?

I guess fairies, if they existed could be logical...

As for the Quotations from Isaiah, read the Book of Mormon, the prophets who are including them tell you why.

Yes, Mitt has family values and is of high character.

I think we should start a group:
“Evangelicals against the Huckster , who are not bigoted”

I would  think that since the gospel was RESTORED by Moroni's gift and by the words of your Prophet's mouths, since WE say that is bunk and do NOT by it; why on EARTH would you want to associate with us?

Why don't you  follow the Bible, which you believe in so much, when it states:

2 Thessalonians 3:6
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching  you received from us.
