Evangelicals Against Mitt
The American Spectator ^ | 1/3/2008 | Carrie Sheffield

Posted on 01/08/2008 4:09:13 PM PST by tantiboh

Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.

The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.

...

THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.

...

ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."

...

Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.

...

The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.

Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

You can vote for whomevert you choose

If your choice is Dr Paul...who is a nice man...I’ve met him..thats fine...Its your vote...

I just will keep on stating that they are all equally RINO/liberal in these areas or that...

There are no conservatives left in the race...

Romney, Paul, Huckabee, Gulianni, McCain

The Siamese Quintuplet RINOs

I dont get flamed by the Rudy, Paul, huck, McCain supporters...

But the liberal MittNittWitts kill me with their vemon and filthy language etc...they are not exactly Christian folk...

They could teach their mirror image Hillary how to curse...

You are a JW until you officially leave it. You are a Mormon until you officially leave it. Self-identification is irrelevant.

My next question for you is, why are you trying to deny the historical fact that Eisenhower was a JW when he was elected? Does it fly in the face of your insistence that only a mainstream Christian can make a good president?

You keep saying this as if it’s true. Could you produce an example from this thread, please?

If you can’t substantiate your claim, I request that you stop making it.

Please. Again can you show me where Ike was ever made member of JW. Please....show me where his name was on the list, where and when was he baptized into a JW congregation. And show me that he didn’t resign. Come on. He was JW, it should be easy, right.

How about a statement ANYWHERE from Ike that he was a J-Dub. Just one. Comeon now it’s easy, right.

We are all for honesty here, so let’s see some actual proof that Ike considered himself a JW, or that he was ever an “official” member. You know that JW’s can’t be members of the military don’t you? You DO know that JW’s shun you once you leave fellowship don’t you? You are the one who is telling us what makes someone a “member” right?

A few on this thread are in direct opposition to the United States Constitution.

The "no religious test" clause of the United States Constitution is found in Article VI, section 3, and states that:

“ ...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States. ”

I’m still in limbo land about who I will vote for. I see no difference in the people who tout the “ROMNEY IS A MORMAN”, not a christian, like the folks who touted the “KENNEDY IS A CATHOLIC”, the Pope will rule America, well from what I’ve seen and heard, Romney worships the same JESUS as I do, just as Kennedy worthishipped the same JESUS and I do. This is just a bunch of huuey. Well we got Kennedy, for while, and he did a pretty good job, we’re not communists...but for heaven’s sake look at the candidates and not their religion...except if one is islam...then, I draw the line.

aw, now you’ve done it. One of tauntiboo’s buddies will have to go change the wiki entry now that you’ve exposed the truth that a JW cannot be in the military and remain a JW. Wasn’t Ike a multi-star general? I think I read that at wikipedia or some place. Bwahahahaha, you get the evening prize, CC! I won’t even need popcorn tonight, this thread is over once you expose a Mormonism apologist for their agenda driven, truth ignoring taunts. Won’t take him long now to sequester this one.

Except, you are a Mormon, unless you got that little thing resolved and I haven’t heard about it.

How can I be the great Anti-mormon AND Mormon. Are you guys schizo?

I am a Christian. I haven't been Mormon (except in their deluded minds and records) for years. I now attend a non-denomination congregation.
