Evangelicals Against Mitt
The American Spectator ^ | 1/3/2008 | Carrie Sheffield

Posted on 01/08/2008 4:09:13 PM PST by tantiboh

Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.

The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.

...

THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.

...

ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."

...

Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.

...

The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.

Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

I’m glad that I believe and follow the scriptures.

It's just too bad your Founder and early leaders didn't "follow the Scriptures" when that POLYGAMY thing came along.

I am sure you would not want to have to be held accountable for those who were selling indulgences.

No where was anyone of today being 'held accountable' for the past.

They ARE, however, being 'held accountable' for continuing to remain in an organization thats own history and writings condemn them.

No 'speculation' about it.

I, for one, have never, ever singled out a denomination or belief system for destruction.

Your Founder and past leaders have.

Most of the context is in verse 30, which you seem to ignore. We believe God commanded it.

You 'believe' thin air.

Like Cuba has said to Tom,

There is NO command from GOD to be found in your Scriptures for polygamy.

Since God commanded it, as He did in the case of Abraham, for example, it was within the scope of His law.

This is wrong.

You CANNOT show in Scripture where GOD 'commanded' Abram to take a wife other than Sarai.

He has not fully explained to us why.

Define FULLY.

Your past leaders laid it out in the

OFFICIAL DECLARATION—1.

We can disagree vehemently over theology; I’m gratified, though, that there are many Christians who, along with you, do not allow that disagreement to spill over into bigotry and hatred.

Just wait...

SOMETHING that gets posted factually about your Beloved Organization will toss him(?) into that category.

“Evangelicals Against Mitt” ++++++++++++++++++++ This headline should read —Evangelicals Against Mitt’s Religion— Kind-a-like a left wing misleading headline that this news[?] source used.

I think the title should remain. These Mormon stalkers have been around for years on the FR's religious threads bashing any individual who would care to listen. They're just visiting over here in the "news" sections since a Mormon is running for president. They believe its their ministry.

You're in for a big disappointment. Check Elsie's message history. I'm afraid its spilled over for many years already.

If a candidate professes a sincere faith in his church's teachings it can't hurt to understand what he believes.

Shout it; Brother!

First, allow me to build a foundation upon which we may build.

You've already GOT a 'foundation'...

Galatians 1:7-10
 7.  Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
 8.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
 9.  As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15
 14.  And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
 15.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

http://scriptures.lds.org/en/js_h/1/19#19
17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother, “I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.”

If one believes the Bible is correct, then, by that Standard, Mormonism fails the test.

If, however, you are convinced that the Bible is either in error, been corrupted or mis-interpreted, then you are free to believe whatever you wish.

I found this on another site ...
_______________________________________

When you boil it down to essential meaning, the writings of leading Mormon apologists are the equivalent.

Here’s my impression:

If you have a problem with the shizzle dizzel of the bifurcated science proving the authenticity of the Book of Mormon and the validity of the testimonies of the Witnesses, you have to assume the glickenshock of the spazzofraz.

What everyone fails to see is that evidence is free for you and me to be what it will be when we shape it to fit what we want to see.

In conclusion, the tortured minds of the anti-Mormon fragmeisters of bizumdooferhausen have proven the penetrational plumfuzz of a groidian baffleputz, which clearly indicates that my position is at least as valid as those of my detractors who are decombobbulated under a regime of deleterious cognitive factors.

The anti-Mormons would have you think otherwise, but as usual they are dead wrong as proven by multiple analyses of the grablockean blitten techniques of regressional devices of constructive gestalt and stuff.

I have footnotes and original documentation to support every one of the above claims. But this is not the place.

McCain wants more amnesty for illegals, Julie-Annie wants to give them welfare and Hickabee wants to give both.

Romney is the last option left. The rest can go to hell...

Standing up on the national stage next to a short, fat old hag, the last thing the Republicans need is a weak, frail old man.

Romney is a vibrant, healthy man and like it or not, in our image driven society, it is solely that image that will elect him.

Now tell me how Biblical is it for a phony like McCain or Huckabee to cozy up to a pagan empire like China and to sell the birthright of our children to a bunch of invaders that are filling our prisons for drug smuggling, rape and gang warfare in the streets???

There are those, however, who think that any positive exposure to Mormonism, as would evidently be the case were there to be a Mormon president, would spread knowledge of Mormonism far and wide; that many more people would be “duped” into believing it and therefore lose their souls.

Yup - that's almost it!

We are CHRISTIANS first, and Conservative AMERICANS second.
