Evangelicals Against Mitt
The American Spectator ^ | 1/3/2008 | Carrie Sheffield

Posted on 01/08/2008 4:09:13 PM PST by tantiboh

Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.

The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.

...

THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.

...

ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."

...

Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.

...

The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.

Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

One need only go as far back as #1047 to get a quick substantiation of what you asserted. Taunitboo must not read all the posts of his 'high fiver' bud.

The response to the Welcome to Armageddon post?

LOL! If that is what you think is a good example of bad behavior on our part, what do you think of mister Darth?

Some professed Christians in evangelical Christianity today follow Word of Faith and believe they are “little gods” in the here and now.

You know, it is so much easier just to believe that Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood to save us, rose again and is coming again...

and if we confess our sins and ask Jesius to save us He will...and then we go to heaven when we die...

Than to have to believe ALL that weird stuff that the mormons have to struggle through...

What sane, intelligent person would believe that dumb stuff ???

:)

With the exception of John, of course, we do not know precisely when the last of the Apostles died. That history is lost.

~”And mormons have been told to soften their sales pitch now because some of the teachings are so bizarre...”~

Hmmm... I must have missed that Sunday School lesson. Would you mind refreshing my memory?

Some of this information is posted and I have pinged 75 other Christians who are going to have a field day with you.

I asked Darth to answer some questions about his beliefs.

He disappears and surfaces bashing someone else.

Several of these others have done the same. They get all huffy and go into a rant calling me a liar and other things.

They will also copy and paste the things they have saved for that purpose. It never answers the questions.

I think it only fair that they answer questions also.

They are just like the people down at Temple Square who stand on the sidewalk and yell at those in the area.

They do not intend to have a civil discussion.

So, you have a practice that is widely mentioned in texts, some of which have questionable authorship, but wide body of work saying that it is unremarkable, and one place in the Bible where it is specifically used as an argument for the resurrection no where where it is condemned, and the position that it was common is the one that is wrong?

That was your mormon supporter bucko. And of course you didn't bother to read it all (as usual) to see that it was historically refuted. Of course you run away.

Says you. My opinion differs.

What input you offer, tantiboh, is appreciated, because I think we're fighting over slogans and "you said" statements. I'll ask this series of questions, so as to clarify things:

1)Who is the Jesus that you worship?
2) Is he both true God and true Man?
3) Was he the real incarnation of God?
4) Was Christ made incarnate in the form of Jesus of Nazareth, and was he preexistent?
5) Did Jesus Christ, being God incarnate whilst also being a man, fully atone for the sins of mankind in his sacrifice upon the cross? and was it validated by his resurrection and ascension?

I hope you don't take this as a matter of being given the third-degree. You seem to be a conciliatory type, and I think your statement could help focus the dialogue towards what you personally believe, compared and contrasted with the teachings of Joseph Smith, the LDS Church, and the canon of Scripture.

After all, we're talking about what Mormons believe, aren't we?

How would lend legitimacy to his faith anyway? Did Nixon’s crimes in office deligitimize his Quaker faith?

An overwhelming number of the Mormons I know are about as decent, hard-working, and honest people as you can find.

I'll ask this series of questions, so as to clarify things:

How about I ask you some questions about your doctrine?

When and how did the doctrine of the three persons change from what was taught in the Apostolic Christian Church to what is taught in modern orthodox Christian Churches?

What specifically is the source of the Doctrine of the Trinity that is taught in orthodox Christian Churches?

Refer me to an independent source and not to your fellow Mormon Bashers.

As a hint, the poster Elsie gave me a link to a thread that gives a very good explanation.

Before we start, I'm not a "Mormon basher," so let's get that out of the way. If those questions come across as somewhat hostile, then I can only tell you that they are not intended to be such.
