Thompson fails to win his case on campaign trail
Hollywood Reporter ^

Posted on 01/08/2008 1:41:44 PM PST by barryg

It takes a "Law & Order"-style investigation to find Fred Thompson on the campaign trail.

The lawyer/actor-turned-presidential candidate has been raising eyebrows for months with his unconventional approach to Campaign 2008. He participated in Saturday's ABC News debate and Sunday's Fox News candidates forum, but unlike every other candidate stumping for votes in the precious few days between Thursday's Iowa caucuses and today's New Hampshire primary, Thompson has been remarkable for his low profile.

"He's done a terrible job of acting in this campaign," said Diane Owen, an associate professor of political science at Georgetown University.

There are no big Thompson rallies such as the ones Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama held in the Granite State during the weekend. There's no "Straight Talk Express" like John McCain, who has been leading the polls here. And Hollywood hasn't come to New Hampshire to campaign with Thompson, like Chuck Norris has with Mike Huckabee or Wilford Brimley for McCain or Viggo Mortensen for Dennis Kucinich.

There wasn't one public event listed in the Manchester Union Leader, the state's mega-politics paper, for Thompson during the weekend. And around media circles, his camp has put out word that he's not going to be campaigning much.

Thompson had certified conservative credibility in a race that has shown a growing split in the GOP between religious and traditional conservatives. But ever since last year, when he appeared on "Fox News Sunday" to talk about a possible run for the presidency and later filed an exploratory committee, Thompson has been more anti-candidate than candidate.

It's that kind of attitude -- out of the norm for presidential candidates -- that has made many veteran political watchers and journalists scratch their heads and wonder what he's doing.

Yes, I’m sorry to admit that the state has gone much more liberal than it used to be. We’ve had a huge influx of lefties over the last 15 years or so, and I can no longer take solace in living in a ‘red’ state.

Nothing about this man’s career-to-date suggests a lazy person.

18 hour days on tv and movie sets, Senators go 24/7, etc.

He runs for President and suddenly becomes lazy?

So, big question: Is Fred not in remission? Does he still have cancer? Is he balancing chemo and this campaign?

The Presidency requires an image of strength and vitality. There’s a certain President we’re all familiar with that the entire planet had no idea was infirmed and profoundly disabled, because the press considers that info off-limits as a reporting item, for obvious reasons.

If my hunch is right, pin the medal on him now, because he’s risking his life and probably going thru physical hell for this campaign.

Duncan Hunter has been all over the place in New Hampshire. He even crashed an MSNBC tv show with Chris Mathews and Joe Scarborough. Joe welcomed him and laughed, but Chris was angry about it.

Lumbering, slow and lazy just won’t Git-R-Done for Fred.
Too bad because he maybe the best conservative of the bunch.

And Hollywood hasn't come to New Hampshire to campaign with Thompson

Now there's a good reason to vote for someone!

Let’s face it: You have to be obsesses to run for the Presidency. No one is going to meekly offer it to you.

Is Thompson obsessed with winning the nomination, like the other Republican candidates are?

Lumbering, slow, and lazy he is not. If you go back even three months you will see as many or more campaign stops for Thompson as the others. What you will not see is any coverage of them.

You wouldn’t know it from the coverage.

The Irony is Thompson has been putting in 10-15 campaign stops a day forever, going on every news show that will give him a slot etc., and the MSM still trots out the tired old, “Where’s Fred?”

Sad to see a Hunter supporter throwing gas on the fire considering all conservative candidates have received similar treatment from the MSM.

“18 hour days on tv and movie sets, Senators go 24/7, etc.”

HAHAHA weren’t the current members of congress bitching and moaning because the congressional leadership decided to work 5 days a week LOL. While I’m sure the media has overstated the “Fred Is Lazy” theme, being a senator, or a recurring, occasional character in a TEE VEE show is hardly working in a coal mine. While I’m sure Fred isn’t lazy, he doesn’t come off as a “Fireball” either.

The real joke is that you support a candidate that can’t manage to excite even 1% of the electorate.

It's all they have.

Hunter needs a better class of supporter.

My thoughts exactly. Since he pinged pissant, should we conclude that pissant agrees with him on this?

Pitiful talking points will not work... they are old and unoriginal... not to mention fabricated. I am so happy that I am not a liberal like you and barrg. Deny it all that you want... but to vote liberal is to be liberal... and rootiemcromneyhuck is LIBERALISM at it’s worst... liberals trying to be something that they are not... and in that weakness lies their defeat at the hands of the dims.
