The PNU party won according to the results, but the elections have been discredited due to fraud, according to British and American diplomats. Kibaki is their candidate and he is an incumbant. His tribe, the Kikayu, is the largest in Kenya, but they don’t even have 25% of the population. Odingo, is the candidate for the ODM party. He is part of the Luo tribe, which is only 13% of the population. Neither of the candidates are Muslim, nor is the majority of Kenyans. I believe that there are only about 10% Muslims in the country.
The violence originated in response to losing and the fraudulent election. It has since been retaliated by the
Kikayu.

This is the Muslim issue: Odinga signed a memorandum of understanding with Muslims in certain areas. He did not release the document, and then someone released a phony one, which claimed that Odingo would support Sharia law. This isn’t something that the Kenyan people want, and Odingo lost many points in the polls. He finally released the real memorandum of understanding and it only said that the Muslim community would support him, in return for his respect of their rights under the current constitution. It was similar to other MOUs that he had established with other minority groups in the country.

I don’t think this is a Muslim/Christian conflict. The Kenyan people have seen what has happened in Sudan and Nigeria with many states having Sharia. They do not want this. There are many issues here, and some are long standing. There are something like 40 tribes there, and many different religions as well.

My personal opinion is that outside Muslims may be encouraging the violence and dissent on both sides, in order to cause instability. Instability would provide an opportunity for the Muslims.

This is information that I got from a close friend whose family is still in Kenya. He returned in Mid-December from 6 week visit. He is Kikayu. I apologize for the long post.

“Muslims are killing Christians in Kenya and Obama calls the instigator and says, “Man, you was robbed! That election was rigged!””

What do you expect a muslime to do?

Raila Odinga has, in his own words, a "close personal friendship" with Barrack Hussein Obama Junior.

Interesting that Obama should sidle up to the agitator aligned with Islam.

On Monday, Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga made key concessions under U.S. pressure... The top American envoy to Africa said Monday that the vote count at the heart of the dispute was tampered with but that both sides could have been involved. The Dec. 27 election returned Kibaki to power for another five-year term.
This is part of the legacy of Al Gore. So was the recent presidential election in Mexico. Thanks g76.

At last! Something for which Al Gore can *truthfully* claim credit.

Although the population is reportedly somewhere between 10% and 20% Muslim depending upon the source, the Kibaki government has ignored the atrocities committed in the name of Allah; however, also reported is this:

Kenya's Muslims voiced Friday, January 4, their support for defeated opposition candidate Raila Odinga, and called for recounting the votes cast in a hotly disputed presidential elections to stem a vicious cycle of ethnic violence. "The overwhelming majority of Kenyan Muslims have voted for Odinga thanks to his pro-Muslims stances," Abdullah Abdi, the chairman of Kenya's National Muslim Leaders Forum (NMLF), told IslamOnline.

Given Obama's father is Muslim, I would not be surprised if Obama is ok with Islam, not necessarily terrorist, but shares the typical European philosophy that we need to leave them alone and they won't bother us.

see: Raila Odinga, the current frontrunner in the upcoming presidential election in Kenya, has promised to implement strict Islamic Sharia law if he receives the Muslim vote in the predominantly Christian country and is elected president.

I read that Muslims were about 30%. Also I read that there was a secret MOU that was not released where Odinga agreed to Sharia in the Muslim provinces.

Muslims only represent about 10%. The Kenyan people are predominantely Christian, and they have seen what happened to Nigeria and Sudan, with the implementation of Sharia. They don’t want that to happen to their country.

There was a MOU and it was disclosed, but its contents were kept secret. The other party took the opportunity to “create” its own version and to issue it as the original. This false version included support for Sharia, and cost Odinga about 10% in the polls. (like I said, the muslim population is small, and the Kenyans do not want Sharia anywhere)

Odinga then released the actual MOU and it did not say anything about Sharia. It was a generic promise of support from the Muslims in the area, in return for Odingas promise to respect their rights under the current constitution. The MOU issue was just political games to win the election.

Odinga is a cousin of Obama, I believe. As I read the article again, I still found nothing to support that Obama has supported Odinga over Kibaki. He has spoken to both of them, and has disputed the election results, which were considered fraudulent by both British and American observers.

I don’t like Obama, but accusing him of supporting those that burnt that church and killed those people is unfair. The American voters may not be the smartest out there, but they absolutely do not support such actions, and would not support anyone who did.

“There was a MOU and it was disclosed, but its contents were kept secret. The other party took the opportunity to “create” its own version and to issue it as the original.”

That just means you believe Odinga and the Muslim version.

” That just means you believe Odinga and the Muslim version”

I would think that the Odinga and Muslim version of the agreement would be the most accurate, given that they are the only parties to the agreement. Actually, I believe that it was eventually proved that the originally released version was a fraud, made and released by political operatives. It was the subsequent drop in polls that eventually forced Odinga to release the original.

I am not really taking sides in this fight, other than to say that the people killing and burning churches are terrorists and should be severly punished for their actions. As for the election, I just don’t know enough about the issues in Kenya to form an opinion.

Making this a Muslim vs Christian issue is just incorrect. I believe and have been told by Kenyans that the violence is not religious, but tribal. I am hopeful that the violence will stop, not only for the people of Kenya that are suffering now, but because the longer this instability goes on, the more likely the Muslim extremists will be to take advantage of it.
