ATR: McCain and Thompson Leave Door Open to Tax Hikes (misleading title)

All but two GOP presidential candidates have committed to voters to oppose income tax increases

WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Among the 2008 presidential field, all but two of the Republican candidates -- Sens. John McCain and Fred Thompson -- have made a written commitment to the American people promising to oppose and veto income tax increases.

Sen. McCain signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge as a candidate for president in 2000, and has signed and kept the Pledge as a Senator.

For two decades, Americans for Tax Reform has asked all presidential and federal candidates to commit to their constituents, in writing, to oppose any and all efforts to raise income taxes. On the presidential level, every Republican nominee since Ronald Reagan has made this commitment, including President George W. Bush. In the current Congress, 42 Senators and 196 members of the House of Representatives have made this commitment, including N.H. Sens. Judd Gregg and John Sununu.

Hence the “FWIW”. I trust Fred on taxes, but certainly no way do I trust McQueeg.

In Ione of the earlier debates, Hunter was one of the only ones to take this question seriously. He said that he opposed new taxes, but without foreknowledge of the future he wouldn’t absolutely say he wouldn’t increase taxes.

Hunter could say about anything he wanted as he’ll not have to face the issue as President. You see there is one little obstacle that he won’t clear and that’s getting elected.

And it was that pledge that helped get us Bill Clinton. The Democrats had a field day mocking George Bush when they conned him into signing a tax increase.

A little early to make the call, is it not. Rudy has ZERO chance, yet why don’t you say that about him?

I don’t trust McQueeg on anything. Did you hear him say last night that pharma companies are “evil?” The guy is nuts.

I still think you’re maybe unintentionally doing old Grover a favor by giving press releases from his organization wider circulation. He (or ATR) paid good money to put this on PR Newswire. Posting it to FR gives him some free publicity (but then it also offers the opportunity to alert people to what a scammer the guy is, so there’s a silver lining :)).

I believe you’re thinking of the similarly named “Americans for Fair Taxation.” They’re totally different organizations with different causes.

There are two critical things to consider.

First, McCain is not signing the pledge because he is not strongly opposed to raising taxes, based on his past performance.

Second, Fred is not signing the pledge because to him I believe he views it the same way he didn’t ‘raise his hand’ when the moderator tried to pavlov him at the recent Republican debate.

Two different guys, saying no for two way different reasons.

I missed a large swath of the debate. But McCain is actually dangerous. And Huck is so clueless, he is as well. At least Mitt and Rudy are competent enough, though they will certainly not get my vote.

Well, you know I ain’t for Fred, but you also know that I know Fred’s record pretty darn well. I know his record on taxes, gov’t reform, spending, the 2A and federalism is solid. But I’m hoping he drops out, nevertheless. I don’t try to be sneaky about it.

Thompson was asked point blank in a recent interview whether he could forsee any circumstance under which he’d raise taxes. He did not hesitate to give an unequivocal “No”. He does not believe raising taxes raises revenue. Period.

I hadn’t heard that. What I had heard of was the request that he sign on to some plan. I believe it was concerning taxes.

If he has made a statement, that’s okay with me. I do think the media and the democrats are massive hypocrits on this topic though. They love to raise taxes at every opportunity and get a pass for it each and every time, if not outright kudos. If a conservative agrees to new taxes, the media and the democrats tear them to shreds.

Don’t get me wrong. I think the people from the right side of the isle should be taken to task for agreeing to tax increases. I just don’t want to hear it from folks who advocate it and do it as a matter of everyday practice.

Maybe you could have gotten them to sign on to one of Duncan Hunter pork barrel spending projects and we could have spent a few more million on another plane that can not fly.

63 Million for critical VTOL technology (of course it did not fly, it was a 1/3 scale prototype) versus 5 billion for global warming and 60 million for educational institutes for liberal and racists. You make the call, nancy.

Well, I see you on so many Hunter threads showing us all how and why Hunter cannot win, I thought you might want to expand your horizons as bit. And Rudy is part of the article I posted here.

Interesting. I think Giuliani is the most dangerous, followed by Huck. For me McCain and Romney are together, and follow close behind — I don’t trust either of them as far as I can throw them. It would be fascinating to poll everyone about who their bottom candidate is.

I hope Hunter does not drop out. I’m not trying to be sneaky, either — I have no illusions that Hunter folks would switch over to any other candidate en masse.

However, on principle I want the folks I consider bad presidential material to drop out, and I want the folks I consider good presidential material to stay in. For me, Thompson’s views match my own most closely — as you know I have a good handful of disagreements with Hunter. However, he’s a good man, and in the good number of areas where I believe he’s right, he’s not just sorta right — he’s very, very right.

I also rankle at the idea of the establishment/media arbitrarily choosing our candidate pool — so my hide is chapped about Hunter, Paul and Keyes as well.

Anyway, best of luck to your guy.

Fred has said he makes no pledges to groups or organizations other than the American people, so he won’t sign any pledges. I just wanted to make the point to others that Fred has made it very clear that he sees no circumstance where he would support the raising of taxes. He has not waffled on this issue.
