How to Rig an Election: Convicted Phone-Jammer Tells All Disgraced Ex-GOP Consultant Allen Raymond Reveals His Dirty Tricks as Party's 'Fall Guy' By MARCUS BARAM
Jan. 6, 2008
What does it take to win the New Hampshire primary dirty tricks or retail politics?
Stick to good old-fashioned politicking, says disgraced former GOP consultant Allen Raymond. "Retail politics and authenticity," he tells ABCNEWS.com. "Up in New Hampshire, they have great expectations of what you need to do as a candidate and you have to do it."
Raymond should know. After all, he's the one who ran an illegal scheme to make hundreds of calls to jam the phone lines of the state's Democrats on Election Day in 2002. The former consultant, who served three months in jail last year, tells his story and reveals secrets of the trade in his new book, "How to Rig an Election: Confessions of a Republican Operative."
Raymond blames the Republican Party for making him the fall guy and claims that his scheme was approved by a top state GOP official and the Republican National Committee's northeast regional director.
Raymond says that the RNC's former New England chairman, James Tobin, called him Oct. 18, 2002, asking, "If I had a couple of phone numbers that I wanted to shut down on Election Day, could you do that?"
Tobin and state official Chuck McGee were later convicted of charges related to the ploy, which helped John Sunnunu win a 19,000-vote victory to the Senate over Democratic Gov. Jeanne Shaheen.
But defense lawyers, who were paid more than $6 million by GOP committees, recently won a retrial for James Tobin, the former official with the RNC.

Come on. The headline is an outright lie.
Nobody “rigged” anything.
This was just a political dirty trick.
Rigging would be like the election results in Seattle, where they kept “finding” more votes until they had the proper amount.
Agreed. This isn’t in the same universe as the debacle in Washingston state.
No, democrats don't rig elections, now do they?
If ABC had any credibility ever, it's vanished now.
John Kerry’s brother was charged with burglary after he broke into the office of Kerry’s opponent to bug the telephones.
...or any rodent-run city in the United States.
Here in Wisconsin, we saw an election “rigged” by the son of a current member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gwen Moore (D - WI) and the son of the former acting mayor of Milwaukee, who slashed the tires of dozens of vans rented to help Republicans get out the vote.
There weren’t too many consequences handed out for that little episode, despite the conviction of those two and their accomplices...
5 in E. St. Louis convicted of vote fraud
Two Convicted for Ohio Vote Fraud, Media Leaves Out They're Democrats
don’t worry, ABC didn’t have any credibility before this story so they had none to lose.
They don’t do stories about democrats who get convicted of campaign violations. The guys in WI who slashed the tires of the GOPs GOTV vans - one flunky goes down and the party officials don’t even get charged - missing from ABC (and everybody else in NY media)
Of course. The Dems are worse. However, it would not surprise me if this guy's actions were sanctioned at "mid level," and he was made a fall guy when the dirty trick came to light. I was involved in Republican party politics at the committee level for many years. I quit when I could not ignore the corruption that I witnessed. However, as long as I live I will never vote Democrat. They are at least as corrupt and their cause is evil on top of it.
Don’t forget the son of the elected Democrat who had a crew of 5 guys help him slash the tires on 2 dozen “get out the vote” vans at the GOP offices on election day.
Walt Disney would be spinning in his grave at what is done under his name brand these days.
ABC News should know all about rigging a debate, they excluded Duncan Hunter from their debate and included Ron Paul who is admitted republican in name only.
Why doesn’t Ron Paul challenge the Libertarian candidate?
Must have missed the ABC "News" expose on all of this. < /sarcasm >
ABC proping up Dean’s Saturday rant. We all know the RATs don’t do this. OK, reality may now resume.
