Pakistan reiterates that it will not allow U.S. forces to hunt militants on its territory

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Pakistan reiterated that it will not let American forces hunt al-Qaeda and Taliban militants on its soil, after a news report said Sunday that the Bush administration was considering expanding U.S. military and intelligence operations into Pakistan's tribal regions.

The Foreign Ministry dismissed as “speculative” a story in The New York Times saying President Bush's top security officials discussed a proposal Friday to deploy U.S. troops to pursue militants along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

“We are very clear. Nobody is going to be allowed to do anything here,” said Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad, the top spokesman for Pakistan's army.

“The government has said it so many times,” Arshad said. “No foreign forces will be allowed to operate inside Pakistan.”

The Pakistan-Afghanistan border area has long been considered a likely hiding place for al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and his top deputy Ayman al-Zawahri, as well as an operating ground for tribal Taliban sympathizers.

In Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai's spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the report.

Bush's top security advisers – including Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice – had debated whether to expand the authority of the CIA and the military to “conduct far more aggressive covert operations in the tribal areas of Pakistan,” the Times reported.

Recent reports indicate al-Qaeda and the Taliban are “intensifying efforts” to destabilize Pakistan's government, the newspaper said.

It said Bush's security advisers' discussion on the proposal was part of an assessment of Washington's strategy following the Dec. 27 assassination of populist opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, a moderate pro-U.S. politician who had vowed to fight Islamic extremists if she was elected in an upcoming parliamentary vote.

Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf, a close U.S. ally in the war against terror, has blamed Baitullah Mehsud, a tribal militant leader allegedly tied to al-Qaeda, for Bhutto's death.

Mehsud has reportedly denied involvement.

Since the central Pakistani government has told the tribal areas that it will not enter to enforce Pak law, does that mean that the militantly Islamist tribal areas are considered “Pakistan” as far as the Americans are concerned?

The Slimes is trying to sow dissent in Pakistan, as usual.

I'd bet this "speculation" is just that - a work of fiction.

“No foreign forces will be allowed to operate inside Pakistan.”

We already have been.

Remember when we smoked that house full of terrorists and the New York Times gave us this picture of the evil American atom bomb?

And all the havoc it wreaked on the poor Pakistani villagers?

It’s beyond me why Bush lets the media undermine our national interest by printing national secrets.

Pakistan can’t have it both ways. Either tribal areas are Pakistan (in which case, Pakistan should effectively police them alone), or they aren’t (in which case, we can/should police them alone or jointly with Pakistan).

We’ve had an “understanding “ with Pakistan for quite some time re: direct intervention. extreme circumstances would have allowed for US forces to act in Pakistan.. that was all that would have been allowed. now.. Good question what gives.

Pakistani newspaper reports quotes two American officials acknowledging that U.S. Special Forces have been authorized to follow and hunt for Osama Bin Laden within Pakistan. Reports of such an arrangement first broke out on india-defence.com after General Abizaid’s visit to Pakistan and the announcement of the Pakistan-Taliban ceasefire deal. A comprehensive report on the hunt for bin Laden run by the Washington Post on Sunday says that Lieutenant General Stanley A McChrystal, the commander of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) operates on the understanding with Pakistan that US units will not enter Pakistan, except under extreme circumstances, and that...

This is just the Times trying to give cover for Hillary’s: ‘If I am President, we will send in troops to take over the nuclear weapons in Pakistan(paraphrase)’ and Obama’s: ‘If I am President we will send in troops to the tribal regions’.

It is all and typical bait and switch by the DBM.

Those tribal areas also go by Waziristan (North and South) and the North-West Frontier Province.

Personally, if we ever make a big sea of glazen rock at extremely high heat, Waziristan’s a good spot to start.

So we claim the right to act unilaterally in Iraq but when it comes to Pakistan some tin pot psuedo dictator says no and Bush obeys? No wonder Osama is still producing records.

The NY Times has the goal of making Bush look bad on the international stage.

Regardless of what we are actually doing in that area, it serves no constructive purpose to advertise.

Right now antagonizing the natives by saying we’re conducting operations isn’t prudent. Especially if we are.

I think that’s why the Slimes are saying we are. The b@sturds!

Either they are “with us” or “against us” ... I don’t understand these “fine lines”. If they won’t help us get the terrorists, then they are against us. Fine ... blow ‘em up ... all of em (before they blow us up again!).

It’s a matter of politics.

If we’re to successfully fight and win against all of those Muslim countries, we’re going to have to take them on one at a time, not all together.

That means trying not to give them a reason to unite against us.

Together, they would make a formidable opponent, and our casualty rate would be much higher. It would also cost us greatly, both financially and politically.

It does leave a bad taste in my mouth to play it this way. I’d rather do it your way - No quarter. Just hammer them into oblivion.

But Bush is doing it the right way, IMHO.

Pakistan reiterated that it will not let American forces hunt al-Qaeda and Taliban militants on its soil.

Reminds me of cities like San Francisco declaring themselves Sanctuary Cities and forbidding law enforcement from going after illegal aliens.
