ORLANDO, Fla. -- Officials said they have unearthed more than 400 pounds of World War II-era bombs and munitions from the grounds around Odyssey Middle School in Boynton Beach over the holiday break.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planned to detonate them Saturday, and warned residents they would be hearing several large blasts.

Among the items found since Dec. 27 were about 50 bombs, several rockets, a rocket booster and a cannon. sponsor

Part of the school grounds was used by the Army in the 1940s to train bombardiers for combat. The Army Corps announced its clean-up of the area during the summer.

They must have done alot of that in Florida.

I played a golf course near Homosassa that was designed around bomb craters.

Can't remember the name of the place...

This isn't in Boyton Beach, the school itself is located about 5 miles east of Orlando Airport.

This area used to be heavily forested mixed with farmland. Then about 10 years ago they started clearing massive areas for housing. About 5 or so years ago Odyssey Middle School was built.

What they didn't know is that the area around where the middle school stands used to be part of the Pinecastle Jeep Bombing Range (kinda funny the developers missed this).

Orlando International Airport was an old Air Force training base, then became an operational bombing base called McCoy Airfield, hence the Orlando International Airport code of MCO - if anyone ever wondered.

Soon after the school was built some munitions were found. They keep finding more, and more, and more. Now the homeowners in the area are up in arms as their homes are probably worthless about now, and the parents are understandably concerened about the school being located on the edge of an old bombing range.

Homeowners should take note that World War II bombing was not that accurate, and if there are a lot of leftovers at the school, there are likely some scattered around nearby residential lots.

But zero tolerance dictates that someone must be suspended — on school grounds! Let’s go to the local grave yard, find a veteran to blame it on, and suspend his a**.

It's also where the X1 rocket plane was glide tested.

Are you kidding?

County officials shut down schools in a fifty mile radius when The FBI found this in a school locker.

But it's impossible that there are WMDs in Iraq.

There are apparently two Odyssey Middle Schools, the one in Boyton Beach and one about 3-5 miles northeast of the Orlando Airport (MCO).

Since the story says the school in question in in Boyton Beach, I guess that's the one they are talking about, but maybe they got confused as well?
