MANAMA, Bahrain -- A sailor from USS Hopper went overboard during U.S. Navy operations in the Arabian Sea, the U.S. military said Friday.
The sailor went missing Thursday around 7:30 a.m. local time while the ship was conducting maritime security operations, said the statement from the Naval Forces Central Command in Bahrain.
"A 'man overboard' was immediately called and air and surface forces from the Hopper, USS Port Royal and USS Ingraham began conducting search and rescue operations," it said.
The sailor, whose name was not released, has not been found but the search continues, the Navy said.
Lt. John Gay, spokesman for the Fifth Fleet, told The Associated Press that water temperatures in the part of the Arabian Sea where the sailor went overboard are about 79 degrees.
"He has been in the water for a relatively long time," Gay said. "But we are hoping that we will still be able to find him."
No further details were immediately available.
USS Hopper is deployed to the Fifth Fleet's area of operations.

In my Navy days I never had a fear of going overboard, although, in my venue, that may have been one of the greatest dangers. When we sailed the North Atlantic in the winter they used to tell us our chances were 50/50 if our shipmates saw us the exact time we went overboard. In warmer water our chances were far better.
The story doesn't say what happened in this case. It doesn't really matter. The very thought is devastating. I hope they found the guy.

Something like this happened a couple years ago. Our sailor spent a couple days bobbing around.
Then some frickin’ Arabs in a Dhow found him.
Do you have any idea what they did to that man?
They gave him fresh water, fed him, gave him dry clothes, transported him to the nearest port and made sure the got safely to US authorities.
They also refused to accept any payment for their trouble...
Given they said “maritime security operations” I wonder if he actually fell out of a RHIB while involved in boarding operations, rather than off the DDG itself.
