Focus on the Family founder James Dobson said Friday that GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's victory in the Iowa caucuses shows that Christian conservatives still have considerable influence.
Huckabee easily defeated second-place finisher Mitt Romney in Iowa Thursday thanks to a wave of support from evangelical Christians.
"The results of the Iowa caucuses reveal that conservative Christians remain a powerful force in American politics. That had to be a great shock to those on the far left," Dobson said in a written release.
Dobson criticized what he called media elites, saying they had written off religious conservatives.
Huckabee's victory "was evidence of an energized and highly motivated conservative community," Dobson said. "Not bad for a supposed bunch of demoralized, depressed, disillusioned and disengaged Reaganites."
Dobson said he has not endorsed Huckabee and said the former Arkansas governor may not win the GOP nomination.
In the next test, the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, Christian conservatives are expected to be less of a force than they were in Iowa.
Almost all of the entry polled Iowa Republicans were characterized as “evangelicals”
How do we distinguish “the Christian Right” from “evangelicals”
in my mind Evangelicals are a fraction of the Christian Right. ie....polling bias
Yet another round with Petronski, who doesn’t address the important issues, such as whether or not Thompson is evangelical, why evangelicals should vote for Thompson, and why the disdain for evangelicals like Dobson.
But we got a good He/She mistake that he managed to make some mileage out of, that’s something he can take to the bank.
And second: Read what Dobson wrote, if you still doubt whose corner he is in I suggest you get someone to read it to you and explain.
Ah, but then you started something else, and so I respond. I know you're anxious to run me off, it's perfectly understandable.
Are you going to call Dobson a Jackass again?
Dobson is a jackass. No capital 'J' necessary.
You are wise.
You seem to have reading comprehension issues.
Real intellectual giant to fall back on those old cliches.
That's what it boils down to with this crowd. Be careful! Big Jim will take your Christianity away with one fell swoop of a "leaked" e-mail.
As a Born Again, Conservative, Evangelical Christian I am shocked at the Iowa Results....
Huckster is a RINO and the “Sheeple” just ignored that....
We’ve been here before with Bush and Carter.....won’t these people ever learn?
I think that it was cross over voters.
My point is there seem to be several people accusing others of not being conservative when the issue could just as well be defined as a matter of priority. If we can’t accept each other on that basis — it’s going to be a long, hard year ahead and assured defeat on election day.
Attacks are not always direct; sometimes they are more oblique and underhanded. In fact, "sneaky and underhanded" is probably the more common type used in politics.
It's interesting that the same sneaky vibe surrounding the Dobson e-mail "mistake" has also emanated from the Huckabee campaign. IMO.
SORRY,read it on another site, but hewill not be able to be in abc or fox debate because of his low numbers.I believe Fox news mention something about Hunter last night leaving the race.said somehing about giving votes to someone else .Anyone else hear it too?
How do we distinguish the Christian Right from evangelicals
in my mind Evangelicals are a fraction of the Christian Right.
It really is confusing. Are "Christian Fundamentalists" the same thing as Evangelicals, or is that another subset of the Christian Right? Is there a pie chart available somewhere? ;-)
Even more confusing, can one be a Christian fundamentalist and not be especially evangelical?
Probably
A fundamentalist might insist on the KJV.
An evangelical puts up signs
Huckster is a RINO and the Sheeple just ignored that....
This was the first time I'd watched those caucii on C-SPAN. My impression is that the system used in Iowa is guaranteed to maximize the "sheeple" effect. I suspect that's already been covered here, though - probably ad nauseum. If not, it's a good subject for later dissection.
Thanks. You make a good show for your candidate as a pasquinade.
Oy. A shandeh un a charpeh.
No, What governor Huckabee shows with his win is that if the Conservatives don't offer up a practicing Christian, who is involved and impressed by Christian issues, the Christians will go elsewhere.
What would you expect them to do? The only other practicing protestant Christian they could vote for is Duncan Hunter, and he has been stifled to the point of nearly being disappeared. Their support of Huckabee was predictable considering their choices, and the anti-Christian rhetoric in Republican circles.
