I was wrong. It was the tax trial of Whitey Harrell but still interesting. I sent you a mail.
I suggest that anyone with significant difficulties with the IRS ask for their case to be referred to the Taxpayer Advocate office. In my experience, they can be very helpful.
Nope -- one of our cats sat on the mouse while scratching his ear.
Any more lame attempts at insults?
Your scenario would require keeping track of everyones expenditures and taxing more as expenditures went up... Under the income tax we have a proxy for expenditures in that income is reported,, not so with the FairTax.. Did you think that through at all? Do you think that you will be asked to “show you papers!” when you buy a bar of soap so the merchant can report that you bought the $15 Victorias Secret softsoap rather than your usual $1 Ivory bar soap..
I’ll give you another try at it .. have a go!
That was during the depression, wasn't it?
I didn't realize you had a degree in psyclology.
It wouldn't require any tracking.
Raise the sales tax 2%, get it? Everyone gets another $1000 prebate, get it? If you spend exactly $50,000, you break even, get it? If you spend less than $50,000, you're better off, get it? If you spend more than $50,000, you're worse off, get it?
Ill give you another try at it .. have a go!
You first. ROFLMAO!
Please show me the statute that says you must, under penalty of law, file a tax return.
I saw NOTHING on that webpage that shows any original legal documents from the trial.”

They are limited in what they can do. Very limited.
We are talking about a few things:
1. The gross and onerous complexity of the current Tax Code and why it always gets that way even after numerous reforms.
2. The superiority of the FairTax and its ability to boost American economic growth.
3. The heavy hand of those with too much power in the IRS.
The Taxpayer Advocate does not involve itself in Tax Court or in federal tax lawsuits.
The Taxpayer Advocate was established because of the lack of attention the IRS paid to taxpayers seeking help with code complexity or with getting refunds, processing payments, etc.
In short, one base expands, another contracts.Maybe, except for the need of new infrastructure and additional newly trained employees times 50 before one dime of Fairtax is collected (where would that money come from at the state level? As if I didn't know). Or maybe you (conveniently) forgot that all those evil IRS employees won't be fired on day one, if ever.
I did forget about your perfect, If this, then that...If that, then this dream world where everything is/would be in perfect Fairtax harmony though.
the fairtax is a return to our founding as a country...limited taxation. The founders would never have dreamed that we would have sunk so low as to tax everyones profits and salaries. How can you support an income tax?
Why?
Obviously, if you are filing returns, you already know the gory details. Are you worried you might wind up in prison if you don't start filing?
If so, I'd consult a criminal attorney. Public chat boards are a bad place to get legal advice.
And your degree in psychology is from what school?
You didn’t even look at the next post - I feel sorry for you.
How is that “cats on meth for an 84 year old” thing working out for you?
I see better logic in some of the AGW stuff that comes across my pinglist.

I'm skeptical of apocryphal stories.
I don't have a link, but I remember the story well. And it is far from "apocryphal." I printed it from the source (USA Today.com, I'm pretty sure) and had it on my desk for weeks.
The story centered on the man's wife, who the IRS targeted after her husband committed suicide. They were threatening her with all kinds of trouble if she didn't cough up the cash immediately.
IIRC, they were in the process of taking her home to pay the taxes they alleged her dead husband owed.
It's been a few years, probably 1998 - 2000, when I read the story. But, it is 100% factual as servantboy777 posted it.
