Wyoming to Hold Overlooked GOP Caucus Before New Hampshire

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Don’t forget about Wyoming.
It’s been overlooked in the hoopla surrounding Thursday’s Iowa caucuses and next week’s New Hampshire primary, but Wyoming Republicans will caucus Saturday and choose delegates to the national convention in September.
Candidates have paid little attention to the state, though.
Only Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter have passed through since September.
“Yes, there have been some appearances by the candidates in this state that otherwise wouldn’t have occurred this early in the process,” said Jim King, who teaches political science at the University of Wyoming. “But candidates are where the media are — in Iowa and New Hampshire.”
So far, no candidate has announced plans to head west for the state GOP’s county conventions Saturday. An exception could be Hunter, who has been to several of the state’s major cities and held out the possibility of a last-minute visit. His wife spent part of her childhood in Wheatland, in southeast Wyoming.

I agree. His strategy should have been to focus on states the other candidates are ignoring and where his message is likely to resonate. He can't compete directly with the big boys, so he needs to run a guerrilla campaign. He hasn't raised much money, but he's spent even less, so he should be able to last as long as he wants. That gives him some options.
His only chance is to have a surprise showing in Wyoming and/or Nevada, and for no clear frontrunner to have emerged by February 5. Probably the best he can hope for is to enter a brokered convention with some delegates to deal with, but even that would be quite a victory for Hunter. It would give him leverage to influence the platform and perhaps even influence the nomination. It would certainly give him the credibility to run for higher office, and perhaps even take another stab at the White House some time in the future.

Duncan Hunter should spend all of his time in Wyoming, Nevada, Idaho, the Dakotas and Montana. Then he’ll have something to show at the convention and he can make some sort of deal where he promises one candidate his delegates in return for being the next Secretary of Defense or Attorney General.

Here at work we monitor both FOX and CNN. Both are, as I type, babbling on about NH "First Primary." Not a SINGLE word about Wyoming. But hey, no bias there huh? Yes, FOX and CNN are a disgrace.
