Thompson: Poor finish in Iowa won't end campaign (not dropping out - rumor from rival campaign)
IowaPoitics.com ^ | 1/2/08

Posted on 01/02/2008 9:42:53 PM PST by ellery

GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson said in an in-studio interview with KCCI-TV in Des Moines that there is no truth to rumors that his campaign will fold before New Hampshire if he doesn't have a strong showing in Iowa.

"That is absolutely made up out of whole cloth," said the former U.S. Senator from Tennessee.

Thompson said a rival campaign was likely the source of that rumor.

"Can you imagine such a thing in politics?" he asked.

Thompson said his campaign is seeing a "surge" in interest right now, and said he has visited 50 communities in the Hawkeye State in the last couple weeks.

"I'm not going to play into any scenario that's not totally optimistic," he said.

Thompson touched on his plan for strengthening border security to prevent terrorist attacks, and his plan to simplify the tax code.

"Our tax code is a mess right now," he said.

Dirty politics.

Notice how Fred just stands head and shoulders above it all. You know...sooo presidential.

Somebody is awfully afraid of the Fredster. Heh heh.

McCain is surging and he's digging into both Fred and Romney's support. The Huckster has the religious right votes locked up.

The McCain "surge" in Iowa is a myth. He is not well-liked here. I was at two Thompson events in the past two weeks; both were packed out and had enthusiastic crowds.

I'm predicting Romney-Thompson-Huckabee-Paul as the top four, in that order, with an outside chance for your guy to take third over the Huckster.

I think it is wrong to say that it has come from Romney, I believe it is more likely it either came from Huck or from even Fred’s team as a ploy to get attention and sympathy. I think Fred’s campaign is feeling a little desperate and I don’t believe it when Fred said he could care less if he is elected or not. Of course he wants to be elected or he wouldn’t be running. I just think it was a tactic to buy Fred time so that he could down play the fact that he isn’t doing too well. I think whoever planted the story is really stupid and it could cost their candidate big time if ever found out.

FRED DON’T PLAY THAT GAME...he doesn’t need to .

Huckster doesn’t have the resources to pull this off , as I understand there has been a phone campaign with the same BS going on in Iowa .

It takes money which means it came from Rudy or Romney .

Hint : Rudy isn’t even playing in Iowa .
Think about it , who does that leave ? ... Romney

How will [the liberal media] explain it?

Gads, I'm afraid to even ask! The MSM is just hopeless. Our local TV station has a young White House reporter who takes himself so seriously, I swear to Pete he could be Ted Knight's grandson, honest! The guy is so cluelessly authoritative that it's half hillarious, half petrifying. Then there are the stupid questions they ask about things I don't care about. I really liked it when Thompson told dumbo reporters who had questions about his performance in polls or his campaign plans, that he was there to talk about the issues, not the polls -- you know, issues, those things that people are voting about???

These talking heads in the MSM truly are lazy and lack any curiosity. They're like parakeets in front of a mirror, I swear!

Unlike other candidates in this race, Fred has not shown himself to be a whiner or a seeker of sympathy.

I sincerely hope this is traced back to the source and that we get fingerprints.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Huckabee plans to pick Cindy Sheehan as his Secretary of Defense?

I don't know about that, but I did hear it on the CBS radio network news (research ;)) at 7 pm Pacific. The lead story on cbsnews.com now (Iowa caucus) doesn't have that detail.

I did search FR when I got back but didn't find anything--I was sure of finding a well-commented thread already if there'd been a hard source for that allegation. And I wasn't interested in starting a thread based on speculation or worse.

And I did do a search now--I'm not going to link to it, but there's a Politico page that alleges such a dropout.

I’ll tell you what, why don’t you let those who support Fred Thompson decide that, eh? He hasn’t backed out yet. Just let us decide whether to continue to support him; you just support who you want to support. How does that sound, hmmm?

Well, she's not an expert, she did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night!
