GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson said in an in-studio interview with KCCI-TV in Des Moines that there is no truth to rumors that his campaign will fold before New Hampshire if he doesn't have a strong showing in Iowa.
"That is absolutely made up out of whole cloth," said the former U.S. Senator from Tennessee.
Thompson said a rival campaign was likely the source of that rumor.
"Can you imagine such a thing in politics?" he asked.
Thompson said his campaign is seeing a "surge" in interest right now, and said he has visited 50 communities in the Hawkeye State in the last couple weeks.
"I'm not going to play into any scenario that's not totally optimistic," he said.
Thompson touched on his plan for strengthening border security to prevent terrorist attacks, and his plan to simplify the tax code.
"Our tax code is a mess right now," he said.
No . I smell Mittbot on this one .....
And I’d not put it all past the Dems who want so desperately to take Fred out now they can taste it. They don’t care who they face later as long as it’s not Fred.
So many suspects... Maybe they ALL did it!
Great line! (and true...)
I will give Chuck one BIG endorsement - he went not just to Afghanistan, but to the most dangerous spot in the whole WOT = and worst since the war began...the isolated "Taliban Central" valleys of the Kunar Province in northeastern Afghanistan - AND - he donned the uniform and gear and went out on patrol with them!
(I know more than I want to about what our troops are going through in that Province - and this was a great morale booster to a small unit that otherwise is pretty much in the shadows...)
“Evangelicals for Mitt” has been completely sleazy, as well.
Yep . This smells like a Mittjob .
Politico is suffering from the same self-promotion problems that BOR is suffering from. If you notice, on their website, they claim to be Kingmakers. This is a problem that some bloggers have. They are more concerned with traffic to their site and in being acknowledged than they are in telling the truth.
Fred isnt dropping out after Iowa and he will endorse no one.
Thanks for connecting some dots, 2a mama. Hope it comes back to bite him!
McCain is surging and he's digging into both Fred and Romney's support. The Huckster has the religious right votes locked up
and at this time in the campaign of 04, Dean had the lock!
YEEEEeeeeHAHHHHhhhhh
Good try tho' - complete with unflattering photo. (these tactics are shop worn)
I’m with you. I think the internals have shown good news for Fred. He was looking especially relaxed and confident today.
If it’s really a rumor - and it came from the Romney campaign - then it may suggest that Fred has more support than it appears. Or Romney desperately wants to make sure he wins Iowa. Unfortunately, I think Fred can only win if the nominating process drags out for months, and that’s definitely not in the GOP’s interest. Unless the same thing happens to the Democrats...
They're in meltdown - that's when people make one worse step after another without thinking it through...
I think it might be something in the Hope, Ark. water - people develop this thinking pattern that, no matter what they do, they either 1: won't get caught, or 2: can lie their way out of it.
I started out favorably inclined toward Romney. I have been stunned by the sleaze level of his campaign and supporters. There is not NO WAY I would support him, should Fred drop out.
Since Huckabee is a socialist and McCain is a loon (not to mention far too liberal), I am going to support Guiliani if Thompson goes out.
At least he hasn’t been spewing mud all over the other candidates like Romney and Huckabee. I can live with him.
I hope it doesn’t come to that....GO FRED!
Hank
I hear you . I don’t think the Huckster is behind this though .
Mittjob perhaps ?
Here’s my view: I haven’t supported Thompson for six months just to give up a day before the real race actually starts. In most of the elections in my life, I’ve had to vote for the lesser of two evils because I wasn’t really pleased with any of the candidates. This election is different: for once I am finally excited to vote *for* a candidate, Fred Thompson. He’s not perfect (no one is), but frankly I think he’s pretty great in a whole lot of different ways — *including* the fact that he hasn’t lusted after the office since he was in short pants.
For 20 years I’ve been bemoaning the fact that we don’t have good presidential candidates. It would be *insane* of me to walk away from a candidate I actually think is great, just because of some naysaying.
The principle is this: if you want to see more of something, reward it. All I have is one little vote, but I’m going to use it to reward what I want to see more of in the future. I’m voting for Thompson this primary; the rest is just noise.
Best freegards to you and happy new year!
Same here. And it's a shame -- I wanted to like him.

Anonymous sources close to the Romney campaign have confirmed that Jason Bonham is not really a conservative and is only supporting Romney due to a homo-crush. According to one anonymous person we found inebriated in an alley who claimed to work for the Romney campaign, "Jason goes into a cold sweat every time Mitt walks past. He can't take his eyes off Mitt's behind. We once caught him in the bathroom treating his body like an amusement park while looking at a picture of Mitt". Other anonymous sources have confirmed that Bonham was teh ghey with Huckabee campaign manager Ed Rollins, but Rollins dumped him shortly before the campaign season began. Some argue that this is because Bonham is hung like a mosquito, but this has not been confirmed.
The best thing is that maybe people will realize that here is a man who doesn't get ruffled.
Can you think of one other candidate, on either side, who wouldn't have come out blustering and demanding an investigation and pointing fingers?
Instead, Fred chuckles and quips about it...
We instinctively want our leaders to be calm under fire - there's a 'feeling of safety' factor with Fred
Post 28 . I think it’s Romney .
That’s a great point — we’ve seen first-hand over the past few weeks how Romney and Huck dish out and handle the dirty tricks. They act like children.
Romney and his minions like Hugh Hewitt, National Review, and Matt Drudge are the only campaign that is reponsible at one time or the other for sliming ALL of its rivals.
First they went after Giuliani when he was the frontrunner.
Than they viciously went after Fred Thompson when he first got in and jumped to the top.
Now they spent the last month going after Huckabee in Iowa. How pathetic that Romney with his resources is even in a race with the Huckster.
And now he’s started against McCain in NH.
Romney and his mouth pieces have gone negative against everyone and I am convinced this rumor is from his camp. Huckabee’s camp is not sophisiticated or polished enough for it.
