Khartoum (4 January) - A hitherto unknown Sudanese Islamist group has claimed responsibility for the murder of an United States diplomat and his driver. They were shot dead in Khartoum on New Year’s Day.

The group, Ansar al-Tawhid, made the claim on the internet, saying the men were killed because the Americans were trying to establish Christianity in Sudan. The chauffeur was said to have bartered away his religion.

I can tell you that 3 young men, that are diplomats, dying in a few months is really unprecedented and I’m not buying any of it on face value.

Ansar al Tawhid is a name also used by Zarqawi’s followers, IIRC.

AL TAWHID means "Divine Unity"...

Zarqawi's group was called Tawhid al Jihad, some sources refer to it as Tawheed wal-Jihad.

Abu Qatada, thought to be head of the Algerian org. known as GIA was spiritual leader to a palestinian group called "al Tawhid". GIA's morphed into GSPC, as I recall.
