Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

Now that is good parenting...

Seems some others want to turn out average voters...

I guess we’ll see if he’s receiving ‘bad advice’ after tomorrow’s Caucus and the next few primaries.
Fred's out of money, and if he doesn't do well in Iowa then he may not make it through the next few primaries.

Too bad Rush never came right out and endorsed Thompson.
That's what he really needed, though even that might not have been enough. But when you consider just how weak the entire GOP field is with the exception of Fred and the bizarre situation right now where Republicans seem to be going for any and every candidate except for the true conservative, then really the future of the party, the conservative movement, and the country are at stake right now.

I think Rush probably didn't want to put his reputation and influence on the line for Thompson. I doubt he thinks Fred can close the deal either, and if he endorsed Fred and then Fred didn't win, then the media would declare his influence over.
I think that's the real reason Rush hasn't endorsed.

Yep, I can always count on the rabid Fredheads for a huge load of Bravo Sierra. Drop dead.

Don't pretend that you were seriously considering a candidate for leader of the free world but the posts of a couple of people on an internet board persuaded you otherwise because they were "rabid Fredheads." Seriously.

Or admit that and look like a bigger fool. Suit yourself.

A Huckabee win would be a ClusterHuck in Iowa.
I hope Romney wins and Thompson gets #2 or at least beats McCain. If Thompson is 4th of 5th, his political obit is in the can.

He’s a DUer pretending to like Huckster.

Sad, aint it, the Huckabee ‘base’ is now the liberal Democrats rooting for him to win to beat Romney, a far more formidable candidate.

Dittos on this.

McCain - pro-amnesty,CFR/ anti-free speech, anti-gun and anti-tax cuts, nanny-stater, gang-of-14, spent years doing his best to bash other Republicans to make nice with MSM. Loves cutting deals with Kennedy.

The devil you know indeed.

Mitt Romney will be a better friend to conservatives and will govern more conservatively than McCain. His fiscal conservative record in Mass. was pretty good, and his plans and agenda are pretty solid and more conservative than McCain’s. Wrapped in a guy who has great exectuive experience and is articulate to boot.

Easy call: Mitt Romney is better choice than John McCain.

By an amazing coincidence, I just heard from a Huckabee supporter a confident prediction that Fred Thompson will totally withdraw from the Presidential race within 2-3 weeks. I think the more I hear from the “preacher” (or his staff) the less I trust him.

Huckster minion crowd is getting more and more desperate, eh.

“Dittos on this.”

One good thing about Fred dropping out is that Free Republic can get back to normal.

I think a Huck win in Iowa would mean a major reshuffle of the race. I don’t personally dislike the candidates but I don’t like Huckabee or Romney’s record or demeanor. It see more of the same. I’m personally tired of GWB style politics and the CEO President. Whoever wins third is going to be the darling. I think Thompson is going to place third. God help us if Ron Paul or Rudy gets that spot. Rudy getting third and not even running in the state would be a major upset to all involved. Paul placing anywhere above 5th would be major because he has enough money to go on till the end and God forbid run an independent ticket. Bloomberg is still talking about running and I think he is going to. He is just a spoiler enough to do it. That is why it is so completely imperative that we choose a two sided conservative. Fred is a two sided conservative. Fiscally and socially conservative without being a bible thumper.

The good news is that the good people of Iowa are awakened to the virtues of Fred in time for the caucuses. The bad news is that he’s a prime target for dirty tricksters on this site for the next 20 hours.

Good news!

I just watched the Huckster on Leno. I saw Fred when he was on too. There's a world of difference in the class of those two men. Thompson is dignified. Huckster comes across as a hillbilly. LOL

Huck was on for two segments. Fred's team managed to play his new commercial (here in Central Iowa), during the break between the two segments...right before they went back to the Huckster...LOL.

Compare and contrast, indeed.
