The New Rules of Marriage

Of course, there is much to disdain about The New Rules of Marriage, but what offended me most was its pervasive celebration of inequality amongst the sexes. Women want more out of relationships today so…men must give it to them. Why is that the case? In every equitable transaction, the side who asks for more must offer more in exchange. This leads us to ask, what do modern women offer men that is superior to what their predecessors proffered in the past?......

He asked his wife in the background if it was OK!

Well...hang on a second here....

Mrs. Wbill is the social director in the house. Quite frankly, she'll make plans and tell me about them later. More often than not - they're family related and I'd just as soon attend.

So..."Hey Honey, Am I available for Poker Friday?"...reasonable question.

"Can I Puh-leeeze go out with the guys on Friday?" ....not a reasonable question, IMHO.

In addition, marriage requires love. Love is a two way street, not a one way street.

And, most importantly, marriage requires respect for your spouse. Without respect, nothing else (including love) will last for long.

Saying "I don't have to ask" shows a lack of respect.

No, I read it. Whatever else he wrote, Miss Chapin’s whining told me he’s really mostly concerned about how badly he’s been treated.

I know if anything is own MY calender in MY house. I don't have to ask my wife or any of the four children. I know if I can go play poker. I don't have to ask my wife.

Didja ever wonder if maybe they're secretly glad when you leave?

No, that's not "it". A good husband considers his wife's feelings.

Now, If you're going to be playing poker on Saturday, then you know that the missus is going to be lonely and bored without you, so it's important to help her fill the time with some meaningful activity. Have her take the five hunting dogs to the vet, or give the swimming pool an acid wash. Something challenging and fun.

Being a good husband isn't as easy as it sounds. You have to always be thinking of others.

"For instance, I just surprised Mrs. Chandler with a new steam iron. It’s a beautiful digital model."

I hope it has a clock on it so she knows when it's time to start cooking dinner.

I know if I can go play poker. I don't have to ask my wife.

An example for us all!

Seriously, no harm no foul, I just know I can't possibly keep up with all the stuff that goes on in our house well enough to make that decision on the fly without asking my wife. OTOH, if I really wanted to go, she'd adjust.

Not asking permission, just making sure I'm not trashing stuff I'd forgotten I'd committed to earlier, which I, being less squared away than you, might do on occassion.

Maybe your buddy was looking for his wife to bail him out because he can't play poker for sh*t?

That's just the kind of inventive genius that makes America great!

"Now........with that poem of yours, I’m afraid if I said something like that, someone else would be leaving me."

It is a pretty funny song (if you like Larry The Cable Guy type of humor.)

Now shbox is going to start wondering if the guy's wife was even home when the call came in? Maybe the "buddy" would rather watch TV than play poker with him?

Marriage is a union, not a "boss"/"slave" relationship.

Exactly. Which is what this article is about.
But it is talking about the wife being boss and the husband being the slave. Somewhere along the lines this became acceptable and any man that refused to adhere was immature or didn't respect his wife or was insensitive.
Seems like the 'boss/slave' thing is ok as long as it is respectively 'woman/man'.

One of the pieces of advice my dad gave me was to practice "Strategic Incompetence".

For Instance, Mrs WBill wanted me to tape some reality TV show so that "We could watch it together". I'd rather get a root canal than sit through Real World/Survivor/whateveritwas. So....one week I set it to the wrong time, another week I set it to the wrong channel, another week I left the VCR on (supposed to be off to be programmed) and so forth. Mrs. Wbill finally gave up on having me watch this ridiculous waste of an hour with her.

Strategic Incompetence.

For awhile, Grandpa was having a hard time getting my Grandmother to go out of the house. Nothing particularly wrong, she just didn't want to go out (I think that it was some sort of passive/aggressive thing, but I'm no shrink). Anyhoo, Grandpa would go grocery shopping and buy all the wrong things. Wrong brands, storebrand stuff that tasted horrible, and so on. And obviously, having grown up in the depression, nothing was going to get thrown away. So...Grandma finally got fed up and started to go shopping with him. Got her out of the house, and got her kickstarted to do stuff on her own again.

Strategic Incompetence. Learn it.

Well lets see... I could read another Free Republic thread about marriage, or I could just go slam my fingers in the door.

Tough choice...
