Low-Key Thompson Stumbles Toward Finish Line
ABC ^ | 1/2/08 | Rick Klein

Posted on 01/02/2008 9:00:41 AM PST by pissant

Two days before the Iowa caucuses — day 15 of his 17-day "hands down" bus tour — former senator Fred Thompson's campaign bus stood motionless in the snowy parking lot of a West Des Moines motel, across from a movie theater and a suburban strip mall.

Thompson's campaign scheduled only one event for New Year's Day, a meet-and-greet at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, about an hour outside Des Moines. Thompson, R-Tenn., shunned the bus, emblazoned with his picture, for the relative comfort of a black Chevrolet Suburban.

(snip)

Thompson has staked his campaign's prospects to Iowa. In seeking to jump-start his campaign last month, he promised to crisscross the Hawkeye State with visits to 50 cities and towns in 17 days aboard his new campaign bus.

Thanks. I’m still wondering why you folks seem to go negative on folks like Thompson and Hunter. They’re the two we need the most.

Fred didn’t spend enough money on tv commercials for them to be excited.
The media won’t promote the ones who don’t advertise heavily. Advertising is not free. So they will ignore anyone not lining their pockets.

Fred is THE ONLY CONSERVATIVE. Thats why he campaigns within his budget.

Oh, c'mon now. Duncan Hunter would campaign within his budget too - if he had funds to budget.

If Fred pulls it out, he will be one of the few I’d vote for without having to go to confession the next morning. Right now, he is sucking oxygen from Hunter, so he should drop out.

I agree. That’s been my take as well. People don’t really start paying attention until about a month before elections. Any polls run before that are basically irrelevent. Even then, they are generally skewed toward the leftists. You have to be very careful about what you buy into early on. And that’s why I also avoid shopping early.

I guess pissant prefers reporting from ABC?! There are many other reports of Fred's Iowa bus campaign which are very favorable.

Here is a link to another thread of a more conservative analysis of Fred's Iowa retail politics from Human Events: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1947169/posts

Spot On....Which is why the MSM is so anxious to do everything in their power to kill his campaign.

My question is this - lately, there's been a lot of nonsense flying around about Fred's campaign being broke - but he DID raise several millions last quarter, didn't he? How could he be broke this quickly?

I wonder who Hunter is going to endorse when he withdraws next week?

I have made it a policy not to post to those with whom I disagree with on this Forum, but in your case I will make a one time exception.

Pizant, as a Hunter supporter your attacking Fred not only makes no sense, it diminishes the great candidate you do support. I know I am not alone on the Forum who think this and feel you are so tiresome.

Grow up and get a life would be my suggestion, but I know you are so full of your cutesy little self that you can't even begin to comprehend what I am talking about.

It would be unforunate if Thompson or Hunter lost - they are the only real conservatives in the race and the only true Rpeublicans. The others are merely “better than Hillary or Obama” (except for McLame who is not a whit different from his opponents on the other side of the isle).

Fred doesn’t seem inclined to sell his soul for the office. I kindof like that. He has a life outside of politics and he’s not looking like he wants to give that up either. Good for him.

Hunter has also drawn criticism for accepting $46,000 from un-indicted co-conspirators implicated in bribing Hunter’s friend and San Diego colleague, Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who resigned from Congress after pleading guilty.

That's pretty disturbing.

Duke sold out the troops to line his own pockets. No honorable man can possibly take money from someone associated with that scandal.

What was Hunter's rationale for not returning the money?

I doubt Hunter will be withdrawing anytime soon. More likely, he'll keep spinning his wheels all the way to Minneapolis.

For whatever reason, Hunter hasn’t caught on. I don’t think there’s much chance he will. Thompson is the fall-back position, and if Fred is who he seems to be, he may pick Hunter as his running mate. That’s a ticket I could endorse easily.

Thanks for the response.

LOL, who writes these stories? OH... nevermind, it's just another ABC guilt-ridden-whiney-@ssed-bedwetter (definition here).

I get the impression, these MSM folks are actually scared of what Thompson represents... and that makes me smile :-)
