Thompson's Retail Politics
Human Events ^ | 01/02/2008 | Martha Zoller

Posted on 01/02/2008 8:30:00 AM PST by rightinthemiddle

“Normally, lack of money is a problem but in the Iowa caucus, lack of money has forced Thompson to do retail politics, which is what he’s best at. He’s getting a surge from it. In this case, lack of money may make the difference.” -- Steve Gill, author of “The Fred Factor”

I know what you are thinking. That gal is in the bag for Thompson and she’s scratching for anything she can find. Not so, I am a typical conservative, I don’t know who I am voting for in the primary. I know who I am not voting for, but I’ll keep that to myself -- for now.

Fred Thompson is traipsing around Iowa, literally. He’s basically out of money and he’s going town to town, house to house, diner to diner meeting the folks. Unlike, Hillary Clinton, the more you see and talk to Fred Thompson, the more you like him.

He walked into the room at the Des Moines Marriot where FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform) was hosting their Congressional Task Force Radio Row. He met and talked with anyone in the room until he sat down for an extended interview with Jan Michelson of WHO-AM of Des Moines. He couldn’t spend time with radio shows from Georgia or Kansas because if he doesn’t make it out of Iowa and New Hampshire, he won’t make it to these other states where his has a good chance of winning more than a few of them. He wowed the room and then headed out to the next stop.

During the course of the day, I saw him all over Iowa in the same boots and leather jacket that he was wearing at the radio row. This was Fred Thompson’s day. (snip)

“Reality? I make my own reality”

The last time i tried to make my own reality I wound up under a restraining order(just kidding LOL) but the data doesn’t support the theory of Fred making it till Super Tuesday. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but it is starting to look less and less likely.

“I really don’t know how you can say that Fred has NO CHANCE of 3rd place in Iowa.”

Didn’t Fred say a couple of days ago that he needed to finish 2nd? His chances of 2nd, while not impossible, are at this point a long shot.

thank you for your post.
I have been thinking it would be foolish to give up so early regardless of how he does in IA. IA means little in the long run.

Thanks, it looks like you raised $450 for Thompson just by your actions alone today.

ANYONE else want to give a little $$$$ today?????

Rush hasn’t endorsed Fred Thompson but he damn sure has made it known that he won’t endorse The Huckster.

I guess in away Rush has endorsed Fred because no one else running for President other than Duncan Hunter has the conservative credentials of FRED THOMPSON.

Ditto your sentiments. I've done it before. When I could not vote for Nixon the second time, and certainly not his opponent, I wrote in George Wallace's name. Not that I wanted Wallace to win, but I refused to not vote. I didn't agree with Wallace on a lot, but he kept his word to the voters.

I am from AL and our son was at a posh New England prep school that year. He thought my write in for Wallace was a hoot and told the other students. When Nixon had to leave office, several of them told my son his mother was one smart lady.

This time, I will be writing in Fred's name because I simply cannot stomach any of the other candidaters except Duncan Hunter, and I really want Fred for President. The others are Hillary lite (McCain; Obama lite (Rudy); Edwards lite (Mitt); Kucinich lite(Paul).

I donated the MAX to my guy.... and so did many members of my Family and extended family. You need 1,000 MORE $450s to get one ad on TV. Go burn a few more hard earned greens for whatever makes ya feel good. Or save them for a stiff drink at 9pm tomorrow... you’ll NEED it.

Well, keep trolling Fred threads, posting negative things.

I think we should all commit to sending money every time you troll a Fred Thread!

You could be his biggest fund raiser!

In this case it means very little overall, but could be very important to how things play out for some.

The numbers to watch are not Fred’s but Romney’s in relation to Huckabee’s. Regardless of how those two place, if Romney is not significantly higher than Huck percentage wise, it will get interesting

Late Breaking Surge for Fred Thompson in Iowa - Zogby 1/2/08

The latest Zogby Tracking poll in Iowa is showing "a late-breaking surge" for Fred Thompson! He has moved up another two percent over yesterday!

On the Republican side, Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, gained a bit on Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas. Huckabee cumulative three-day tracking total equaled 28% support among likely Republican caucus–goers, while Romney moved up from 25% to 26% support. Arizona Sen. John McCain remained in third place at 12%, tied with former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who has seen a late-breaking surge. Among Democrats, 5% were yet undecided just three days ahead of the caucuses. Among Republicans, 6% were yet unsure.
error of +/– 3.3 percentage points.

Republicans –
Iowa Tracking
12-29/1-1-08 12–28/31 12–27/30 12–26/29
Huckabee 28% 29% 29% 29%
Romney 26% 25% 27% 28%
McCain 12% 12% 13% 11%
Thompson 12% 10% 8% 8%
Giuliani 7% 8% 7% 8%
Paul 9% 7% 7% 8%
Hunter 1% 1% 1% 1%
Undecided 6% 6% 6% 6%

From Zogby's results it looks like Fred is the one who's been surging over the last week, not McCain.

Matched. (I could upgrade my dialup service to cable modem with the money I have sent to Fred. Best not to think about it.)

I made it my policy several years ago that ALL of my donations would be made to pro-gun causes. At this point in time I can think of no more important pro-gun effort than to elect a President who will nominate Supreme Court Justices who will respect the Second Amendment.

Most importantly, what happened to Julie-Annie?

Rudy was the darling of the MSM and seemed a shoo-in for winning the nomination. He is the "people's mayor" or some such thing, isn't he? And the polls now show that he is running BEHIND Fred? Sounds like a good thing to me.

To be fair the Zogby poll is only for Iowa. Giuliani hasn’t been campaigning there. I don’t know where he is nationally.
