CALEXICO, Calif. - Children are more likely to shield their faces than to smile when Daniel Santillan points his camera.
Santillan's photos aren't for any picture album or yearbook they help prove that Mexican youngsters are illegally attending public schools in this California border community.
With too many students and too few classrooms, Calexico school officials took the unusual step of hiring someone to photograph children and document the offenders. Santillan snaps pictures at the city's downtown border crossing and shares the images with school principals, who use them as evidence to kick out those living in Mexico.

There are some, no doubt, who will say this policy is heartless and cruel, because it targets children. I say, rather, that it properly prevents the reward of families who have made the decision to violate US law.
We are not responsible for educating the children of Mexico. That is the responsiblity of their parents, or the state, depending on how Mexico does such things. Just because a child lives within walking distance of a border crossing does not give them any special rights.
If the parents really want their kids in American schools, let the immigrate.
I think I read this story somewhere else this morning.
yep, here it is: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1946443/posts
I wonder if the classes are in spanish.
They probably couldn't qualify for a tourist visa let alone an immigrant visa.
Same article, posted yesterday from a different source with a different title.
This has got to be wrong! I heard that we could not do anything about the people here illegally!
<sarcasm off
It’s about time someone did something constructive and got rid of the illegals. If it were up to me I’d put a bounty on them and let the bounty hunters do the deporting. It’s bound to be cheaper and more effective than what we are stuck with today, but photos and review by the principals is a good start.
Our school system used to require proof of residence and they all had the same PO Box. They had to get to the nearest town and get on the bus but now we send the buses to get them.
Semper Fi,
Kelly
PS If Congress would amend the law so that hospitals wouldn’t be forced to treat everyone who shows up in the ER with nonemergency room care and ceases giving federal food & housing assistance to illegals and forces schools to check applicants for legal status; a lot of these exorbitant costs would diminish and then and only then the illegals would get the hint. The free ride is up!
It is easy to see why this is such an important issue to the Mexican government. If they had to pay for the education and medical care as well as public assistance for these millions of illegals they would have to spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year. We are the pressure plate for Mexico that prevents another revolution in that country.
This has been going on in San Diego for a long time. And the school board is aware of it.
That should be policy at every border town.
