Miss. congressman to replace Sen. Lott

By JACK ELLIOTT JR., Associated Press Writer 8 minutes ago

Republican Haley Barbour's choice to succeed Sen. Trent Lott is Rep. Roger Wicker, a conservative congressman, congressional officials with knowledge of the selection process said Monday.

Wicker, 56, will serve until a special election is held, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made. Wicker is expected to be a candidate in the special election, which Barbour has scheduled for Nov. 4.

Wicker had been mentioned as a possible successor since Lott's resignation this month after serving one year of a six-year term. Lott's term runs through 2012.

Barbour was to announce Wicker's appointment later Monday.

Wicker also was resigning from the U.S. House.

Wicker was elected to the U.S. House in 1994 to succeed the late Rep. Jamie Whitten. He has been re-elected six times from the 1st District in north Mississippi.

Senators and Congressmen that decide to up and quit in the middle of their terms should be held personally responsible for the cost of any special election.

Wicker is my rep and he is a good one! I hope Flowers from the State Senate runs and wins his seat.

District is extremely conservative, with minus Marshall (my old home county) and Benton will all vote Republican. Desoto county with all of the white flight from Memphis will choose the new rep.

They do that for a reason. When it's a republican senator with a republican governor, then the governor will select a republican to replace him. Then he's an incumbent and will win the election.

Senator Kay Baily Hutchinson of Texas is going to do the same thing. Governor Perry will select a republican to replace her.

I believe there is NO special election for a senate vacancy..it occurs at the next regular two year election cycle...in this case 2008..and the winner serves for the remainder of the original term. Only House seats are filled by special elections..

I hope this report isn’t correct. Gov. Barbour’s press conference begins in 12 minutes, so we’ll know for sure then.

I ask this out of ignorance: Is Haley Barbour another low life politician?

(Need I ask when it comes to politicians? But I thought I would throw the dice anyway.)

Haley’s good people.

Too bad it wasn’t Chip, but since he withdrew from consideration, Haley made the best possible pick.

Yeah, I just watched Wicker accepting at the press conference.

I think it was a huuuuge mistake for a governor that has made very few mistakes in his political career. Roger Wicker is in bed with the most corrupt and anti-American elements of Puerto Rican politics, going as far as appearing with Ted Kennedy in a commercial for liberal Democrat Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá (who has spoken out in favor of members of separatist terrorist groups) when he ran for governor of Puerto Rico in 2004, and then defending Acevedo-Vilá in the editorial pages after he stole the election by getting overvotes counted for him; I hope that Governor Acevedo-Vilá does not return the favor by endorsing Wicker from his jail cell (Acevedo-Vilá will almost certainly be indicted for corruption by a federal grand jury within the next couple of months). I didn’t think that it was possible for a Republican Senator from Mississippi to be more disloyal to Republican principles than was Trent Lott, but sometimes good men like Governor Barbour get really, really bad advice.

I appreciate your response.

Thank you.

I thought I would share the following with you:

Territorial Governors—are nothing but politicians who go out to the outskirts of countries and suffer the privations there in order to build up stakes and come back as United States Senators.

- Mark Twain’s Autobiography

No matter how healthy a man’s morals may be when he enters the White House, he comes out again with a pot-marked soul.

- quoted in My Father Mark Twain, Clara Clemens

History has tried hard to teach us that we can’t have good government under politicians. Now, to go and stick one at the very head of the government couldn’t be wise.

- New York Herald, 8/26/1876

In other words, as a lot of know, politicians are lower than low life.
