Why is Thompson your pick for ideology? Hunter is more conservative for a longer period of time (No road-to-Des-Moines conversions) than Thompson.

Hunter is an interesting one. A fellow on our local radio put forth an idea he had on why Hunter (a good conservative) has generated so little enthusiasm. Every other candidate is a "star" of sorts. Rudy, 9-11; Romney a Mormon; Fred a TV Law & Order star, Huck the preacher Elmer Gantry type; McCain the War Hero, always on CNN guy; Ron Paul the shock a minute, anti war ranter.

In short, poor Hunter is just such a plain, ordinary fellow he just can't get noticed. LOL. Anyway it's as good an explanation as I can think of.

“RE: Fred Thompson, it sounds like Fred is not a real friend of the Second Amendment—and he could be quite the Globalist.”

Fred not a friend of the 2nd Amendment? You are off 180 deg on that!

Because by an large FR is populated with fiscal conservatives who are somewhat uncomfortable with a former pastor leading our country.

“Ronald Reagan was not a RINO. Reagan was an active registered DEMOCRAT that campaigned for Roosevelt, Truman, Adlai Stevenson (Yes Reagan worked for Stevenson and not IKE), and he campaigned for Kennedy. Reagan was an active liberal and he put his money where his mouth was. He was a large donor to the Democratic party for decades.

Reagan was in fact a true liberal that changed his stripes only when in his 50s. Then he became known as the definition of a conservative.

As Winston Churchill said many year ago, “If you are not a liberal at 20 you have no heart. And if you are not a Conservative at 40 you have no brains.” Churchill was a liberal member of Parliament and one of the leaders of the Liberal party. Then in mid life he crossed the isle to the Conservative party and in a few years was the leader of the Conservative party. Churchill became England’s most famous and effective Conservative Prime Minister. But he started out as a liberal.

Tons of people have changed their minds. Teddy Roosevelt started out a conservative but by the time he became president he had become a real liberal. That is why he came back to the USA and did all he could to defeat conservative Taft and elect his fellow liberal.. a Democrat named Wilson in 1912.

Many people are ignorant of history. Few express their ingnorance so succinctly.”

Thank God someone is still posting some sanity around here!

There is a reason that Rush Limbaugh is tough on McCain — or should I say, “multiple reasons.”

IMNSHO, none of the announced candidates are outstandingly worthy of the sweat off of my gluteus....at this time.

Why aren't FReepers taken in by certain candidates?

I'd guess it's because FReepers are hardcore political animals who analyze a myriad of aspects to nearly every issue and/or question. Sometimes, to excess.

Just my opinion.

“Requiring people to have Private insurance is not socialized medicine, in my view. If someone doesn’t have private medical insurance and has an accident, who pays for his medical care? The taxper. Now that’s socialized medicine.

I don’t know where you reside but here in CA, I’m required to have auto liability insurance. And that’s a good thing, in my opinion.”

yep

“I’m not particularly hardcore (despite what my family thinks), but wouldn’t what you’re describing be called having principles and standing by them?”

It serves an ego well, but doesn’t win elections in the real world outside of FR.

Compromising your principles can be a virtue, if it keeps the looney left at bay.

Anyway, things will be sorting themselves out soon and everyone can love one another again... :)

Happy New Year!!!

“In the end, I think that Freepers haven’t been sold on Romney because they are looking for perfection, and Romney isn’t perfect. Lots have been sold on Thompson because Thompson has done a better job of hiding his flaws.”

Talk about flaws, your thinking is flawed to the core.

I’m not looking for perfection, I’m looking for a conservative. Romney has a record. It’s not difficult to figure out by looking at his record that he’s no conservative, RINO, yes, conservative, not.

I’m not sold on Fred because he has done a better job of hiding his flaws. I like Fred because he is a conservative and he has a far more consistent record of being a conservative than Slick Mitt does.

Your assumptions are flawed—very flawed.

McCain has the best chance of winning the ‘08 Presidential election against any candidate the Dems field. I think he would win easily but don’t think the nomination is his. MHOOC.

Not my choice by a long shot but I am a realist.

I doubt it. I think that McCain would be a media darling right up until the RNC convention - then suddenly the only thing journalism would want to talk about would be the Keating Five.

I agree that history suggests the difficulty of electing a Republican POTUS with a sitting two-term Republican POTUS in office. I just do not consider McCain to be a solution. IMHO the solution we need is a conservative who can win like Reagan by consistent and unflappable good sense. Reagan is, sadly, not on the ballot. The least worst on offer seems to be Thompson.

FReeper 2ndDivisionVet had this to say about Huck.

FRED THOMPSON is the best person to lead this country. He is a true conservative and has been his entire life. All one has to do is check his record to see this.

... Without argument, President Reagan was the best commander-in-chief a military person could ever have served under. Fred Thompson possesses the same qualities and vision as President Reagan in that he is strong on national defense and sees a dire need to secure our borders and control immigration.

I can think of no better person to lead this country and fix the problems we have. He is the only candidate from either party who has specific and detailed plans on border security and immigration reform; revitalization of America’s armed forces; saving and protecting Social Security; and tax relief and economic growth. These are detailed on his Web site at www.fred08.com . I challenge you to find any other candidate who has laid out specific plans to fix anything.

Fred Thompson has published his first principles, some of which are mentioned above. In addition to those, he strongly believes in individual liberty, personal responsibility, limited government, federalism, traditional American values, the rule of law and is a strong proponent of the Second Amendment — all concepts established during the birth of our country and documented in our Constitution.

Again, try to find any candidate who has laid out their plans to “fix” this country. You will find they all speak in vague and abstract terms on their plans.

For those who have heard Fred Thompson speak, you will usually hear him say that the Fred Thompson you see today is the same Fred Thompson you saw yesterday and is the same Fred Thompson you will see tomorrow. He stands by his principles and values and doesn’t shift his positions based on polls or public opinion; in other words, he doesn’t say what the voters want to hear just to get elected, but remains steadfast on his views and convictions.

During his time in the Senate he focused on three areas: to lower taxes, strengthen national security and expose waste in the federal government. Fred Thompson has foreign policy experience, having served as member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Senate Intelligence committees.

As chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, he opened the investigation in 1997 on the Chinese government’s attempt to influence American policies and elections, and this investigation identified connections with the Clinton administration (documented in the committee’s report).

As a member of the Finance Committee, he worked tirelessly to enact three major tax-cut bills. Fred Thompson remains steadfast and even though a person may not agree with all his views and he understands some may disagree with him, you can count on him to be consistent and unwavering.

Don’t be fooled by his laid back approach and what critics call his “laziness.” As a former assistant U.S. attorney, he earned a reputation as a tough prosecutor and he possesses the toughness this country needs in order to tackle today’s and tomorrow’s issues.

I ask that you take a hard look at what this country needs, then take a hard look at all the other candidates’ views, policies, their records and their track record on consistency. Fred Thompson possesses integrity, loyalty, commitment, energy and decisiveness, all traits of an effective leader, and will emerge as the best person to take this country boldly forward.

Well! A phony from Arkansas with no money put him on his keaster. If he loses Iowa, which he might, he is in serious trouble. He has spent ten times what the other candidates spent in Iowa and he’s in the fight of his life there. I think you might have had the coronation a little early.

Perhaps so for Duncan, still not done for Fred, but ironically for you, Mitt will not get the nod either.

"Can you name for me the last time a Senator was elected President? Can you name more than one?

-----

In this case that's entirely irrelevant. If Fred got the nomination, he'd be running against Shrillary, Edwards, or Obama - all Senators.

One of them would have to win.

Hank
