Son Of Pres. Hopeful Hunter To Run For Congress

SAN DIEGO -- Ten people took out papers Friday to run for Congress in various districts in San Diego County, including Duncan D. Hunter, the son of Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon.

The younger Hunter, who is also a Republican, hopes to take the East County seat being vacated by his father, who is running for president.

Hunter, a Marine captain, returned home from Afghanistan in time for Thanksgiving and is no longer on active duty, said campaign spokesman Dave Gilliard.

"I have been overwhelmed and inspired by the support I have received since returning from Afghanistan," Hunter said. "This campaign is off to an exciting start and I am looking forward to meeting as many voters as possible between now and June."

Gilliard said the campaign plans to open a headquarters and put on some events next month.

Hunter announced his candidacy earlier this year but refrained from political activity while he was on active-duty.

His father has often boasted that he was the only presidential candidate with a son in a war zone.

Others filing to run in Hunter's 52nd Congressional District were Democrats James Hester and Mike Lumpkin, and Libertarian Michael Benoit.

Libertarian Lars Grossmith filed to run in the 49th District held by Republican Darrell Issa.

In the 50th District held by the GOP's Brian Bilbray, Democrat Cheryl Ede and Libertarian Wayne Dunlap took out papers.

Dan Litwin of the Libertarian Party was the lone candidate who took out papers in the 51st District of Democrat Bob Filner.

In the 53rd District of Democrat Susan Davis, the two candidates so far are Hugh Moore of the Green Party and Edward Teyssier of the Libertarian Party.

Candidates must return their papers with signatures by March 7 to get their names on the ballot.

I didn’t know that Duncan (senior) was relinquishing his seat; it’s not like he’s got a chance to get the nomination.

I have nothing against Mitt, but the guy says some goofy things on the trail.

Hardly spewing garbage. I'm a fan of his, but I'm also realistic. Hunter isn't even a blip on the radar, so I honestly don't know why he'd give up what's probably a safe congressional seat.

Is it possible that he is hoping for a higher office having raised his profile with the presidential bid although probably realising he has little change of that seat exactly?

I wonder f.e. if he is looking at the Vice Presidency or some other like a senate or governorship? Does he have a change of any of those? In California?

I would guess that if any of the more liberal (except maybe Rudy who needs a southerner) republicans get the nomination they would consider pick him, or Fred as their running mates. Or am I betraying my lack of understanding your political system?

One across the pond hoping for preferably Fred, or Rudy to become your next president...

Probably because he's interested in serving his country, not just sucking off the government teat?

He's been in Congress plenty long enough, and I think it's commendable for people to move along eventually. Hunter's a good man, and I think the voters could do considerably worse than vote for his son as their next Congressman.

“I didn’t know that Duncan (senior) was relinquishing his seat; it’s not like he’s got a chance to get the nomination.”

Unlike other congressional candidates (Ron Paul, etc), Hunter is campaigning for president and didn’t play the underhanded game of hanging on to or campaigning for his house seat while doing so.

Why has the media completley ignored Duncan Hunter? You never see him any more.

Why has the media completely ignored Duncan Hunter?

Because after a year of campaigning, the voters have essentially ignored him.

The voters have hardly had a chance to even hear the guy, thanks to the media and the loser bosses in the GOP. Hunter is not a sellout to the free-traitor mentality which now dominates the big business interests who fund mainstream GOP candidates. He’s a patriot who puts America first. Frankly, he may just be too damn good for our country in its present state of childish decadence. It’s apparently more important to listen to juvenile questions about baseball and gay generals gripes that to give Duncan air time.

Yeah, like we don’t have enough family political dynasties already. Wonder how well he would do without the last name? If you feel bloodelines are a sign of good leadership ability, why not just push to get rid of elections and just let us have a royal family?

*Why has the media completley ignored Duncan Hunter?*

Because the MSM is liberal and
Hunter is the adult conservative in the race
