Russia lost more than 200,000 people this year, the statistics service said Saturday.

The population decline of 0.15 percent was slightly smaller than in 2006, RIA Novosti reported. The country's population was estimated at 142 million as of Nov. 1, the Russian news agency said.

While the death rate continued to exceed the birth rate, the number of immigrants was up 87 percent. Most newcomers were from former Soviet republics.

The working age population was 75.1 million in November, or about 53 percent of the total population.

United Nations demographers say if current trends continue, Russia's population will be one-third smaller than it is now in 2050. President Vladimir Putin has pushed for policies to push the birth rate up, including increased maternity benefits and additional benefits for families with children, especially for those with a second child.

Real income grew by 10.1 percent in the first 11 months of 2007, with the top 10 percent of the population receiving more than 30 percent of all income. More than 15 percent of the population had incomes below the subsistence level.

Good! The “Black Russians” (as known in the trade) are ruining the jewelry industry...well them & the Chinese. I know, we own a small jewelry store here in NW NJ.

Robert Heinlein predicted something like this way back.

He and his wife visited the Soviet Union and noticed the lack of population (and baby carriages) back then

Anyone remember the article?

And since this is from Russian government data, I’d say that it’s very likely that the real numbers are much worse. Putin and his KGB cronies have spent their lives lying to themselves and everyone else about pretty much everything.

If they had a little more emphasis on the individual, they might have an in-migration from the west to close the gap.

It’s really too bad. There’s much to admire about Russian literature, science, music, technology, even religious teachings (they have more experience with killer Islam than most of us). Russians have a centuries-old rich cultural heritage and they’re aborting and drinking it down the drain. And all Putin-Vozhd knows how to do is saber-rattle just like his predecessor Nikita S. Khrushchev. Will it soon only be foreigners who will be around to appreciate classical Russia? Just like ancient Rome?

MadIvan, where are you?

Russia’s largest problem is its people have lost faith in their future. They have no hope. They see their Muslim neighbors having up to 10 kids per woman and China sending millions of its citizens into the Eastern half of the country and KNOW it is only a matter of time before they will disappear as a people. No amount of financial incentive is going to overcome that gloominess. Millions of ethnic Russians are abandoning the “frontier lands” and moving to the ethnic Russian population centers, giving defacto control of millions of square miles of land to non-Russians.

China will annex the eastern portion within 15 years if demographic trends continue the way they are and Muslims will probably try to seize the nation as their numbers turn to the majority of the armed forces within 10 years.

Either scenario is frightening but Russians are paralyzed because the only way to prevent their extinction and current supremacy over others is by a violent spasm. The longer they wait the worse it’ll be for them.

We should look and observe Russia carefully because that is our future if we lose hope and lack the courage to do what’s right regardless of the consequences.

Don’t forget Ralph Peters, whom I consider to be the best analyst on Russia’s future.

The guy I was referring to was a science fiction author with no formal credentials at all. Just a very sharp eye.

A carbon footprint is nothing compared to entire populations being destroyed (Number One Environmental Disaster) by abortions. The Russians should open the doors for Romania, they seem to have a large number of nice little children.

Did I read that in USA alone, somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 million children have been aborted?

Russia needs to criminalize abortion in order to survive.

These numbers are actually quite better than in the recent past. The net loss has been cut in half from what it was a few years back when the population was dropping 700K a year.
