Another former Mass. governor campaigns with McCain
Manchester Union Leader ^ | December 29, 2007 | Dan Tuohy

There's a new Swift attack in town, and her name is Jane.

Former Bay State Acting Gov. Jane Swift, campaigning with John McCain in Manchester, challenged the qualifications of Mitt Romney and other Republican presidential rivals last night.

Swift said Romney, who followed her as governor, lacks the foreign policy experience of someone such as McCain, a military veteran and senior U.S. senator from Arizona.

"We can sleep at night," she said, knowing McCain is President.

McCain, launching a campaign blitz in New Hampshire, sounded a similar note as he spoke of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and the struggle against terrorists around the globe.

"I have the experience, the knowledge and the background," he said at a town-hall meeting hosted by the Manchester Young Professionals Network.

The McCain campaign has scheduled 21 stops this weekend, the last a New Year's Eve party at the home of Chuck Douglas, a former congressman who serves as vice chairman for his New Hampshire campaign.

While his rivals are spending more time in Iowa for the first caucus, on Thursday, McCain is redoubling his efforts to score a come-from-behind victory in the New Hampshire primary, on Jan. 8.

His efforts may be paying off, according to some polls. The University of New Hampshire's most recent poll found Romney and McCain nearly tied, 28 percent to 25 percent.

"We're getting down to the home stretch, and the people of New Hampshire are beginning to make up their minds," McCain said.

McCain cast himself as a tax crusader and battle-tested leader. He said the GOP lost control of Congress in 2006 because spending ran amok, not because of the war in Iraq.

"We are succeeding in Iraq," McCain said in response to a questioner on the billions being spent to wage the war. "Al-Qaida is on the run. They are not defeated."

McCain also gave a pitch for nuclear power to lessen U.S. dependence on foreign oil and to curb greenhouse gas emissions. He said America should speed up the licensing process for nuclear power plants and consider offering tax incentives to power companies.

As McCain surges in New Hampshire, the Romney campaign is criticizing him on taxes and immigration in a new television ad.

McCain has called the ad a sign of desperation.

When Jane Swift hit the campaign trail for McCain and first attacked Romney as a "flip-flopper" for changing his positions, the Romney campaign called it an act of desperation. After saving the 2002 Winter Olympics from fiscal crisis, Romney captured the GOP leadership role in Massachusetts and served a term as governor.

Other former Massachusetts governors are mixing it up in New Hampshire.

Paul Cellucci, campaigning for Republican Rudy Giuliani, criticized Romney's record on taxes. William Weld, campaigning for Romney in Windham this month, dismissed the attacks and called Romney "a true-blue fiscal conservative."

In an interview last night, Swift said McCain has more courage and experience than any candidate from either political party. She said Romney is leading in some polls because of a considerable "favorite son" factor for being a neighboring politician. The millionaire businessman also has a vacation home on Lake Winnipesaukee.

"You have a huge advantage, if you're a Massachusetts politician, in New Hampshire," Swift said. With that in mind, she said McCain's success to date shows his appeal and tireless campaigning. But familiarity can breed contempt, a couple of Massachusetts residents suggested last night as they huddled to see McCain. "A favorite son?" asked Frederick Tarr, a veteran from Rockport, Mass. "A favorite son of ... what?"

“”We can sleep at night,” she said, knowing McCain is President.”

She’s as crazy as he is.

We should all recall that she was governor of Massachusets on Sept 11, 2001.

Not only was Jane Swift governor of MA on 9/11/01, she did not fire Virginia Buckingham, Executive Director, MassPort when Buckingham told the press that she did not feel responsible for the security at Logan Airport.

Buckingham was awarded $180,000 plus severance when she left MassPort.

Swift inherited her position when Celluci became an ambassador. As far as I know, she was never elected governor.

She's a nitwit. She's the Kiss of Death to anyone's political career. McCain should drop her like a hot rock.

Wasn't Jane ‘not so’ Swift an incompetent boob?

When she left office I seem to recall seeing on TV, celebrations, marches and parties in the street that mimicked pictures of the French Revolution when the Monarchy fell.

:-)

Wonder which candidate paid Swift to give this “endorsement.” Talk about getting an albatross around one’s neck.

I'd forgotten about Guerriero - I was also at that one in the Boston Delegation which was way gaga over Jane and Pat.

There was a ton of pressure to vote for her but I couldn't do it solely because she bore the Bulger Brand on her ample rump.

Former Bay State Acting Gov. Jane Swift?

Well blow me down!

Another hack looking to get a job with an administration that is but a figment of her imagination.

The media darling McCain will self destruct once again causing the "former Bay State Acting Gov. Jane Swift" to wish she had cuddled up to Fred instead.

Oh well ... she can be thankful she isn't running for office in Pakistan.

Maybe McCain will take a shine to blueberry picking... good pastime for senile, old RINO’s.

It was just a metaphor, my friend, only a metaphore. I sleep like a log with the clear conscience of a conservative.

Romney campaign called it an “act of desperation”. I would call the fact that Romney is a flip flopper the “truth”.

I suffered through that fat bimbos reign as governor. She is so stupid that her endorsement will be read by most people who know her as an anti-endorsement.
