Excerpt -

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan: A commander of pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan rejected government claims that he was behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, his spokesman said Saturday.

The spokesman for Baitullah Mehsud, whom Pakistani authorities describe as an al-Qaida leader, dismissed the allegations as "government propaganda."

"We strongly deny it. Baitullah Mehsud is not involved in the killing of Benazir Bhutto," Maulana Mohammed Umer, said in a phone call to The Associated Press from South Waziristan tribal region. "The government is leveling a baseless allegation and we think it is doing so to divert the attention of the people of Pakistan from the real killers."

I never thought that there was a more disingenuous people on Earth than Democrats, except when I learned about Muslims.

If you believe the news papers, then it looks like Mehsud is the one. Sad thing is, can you?

Never mind I take it back. Check this:

BAITULAH’s threat: The federal government has directed all provinces and the Islamabad capital territory administration to step up security around ten Shia individuals and political leaders in the light of intelligence that Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud has placed them on his hit list to be targeted in the very near future, Dawn has learnt.

I wonder why he’s denying it -— seems like he would want to take responsibility (credit) for it.

If they can blame Musharaff it will destabilize the country. Pretty hard to govern when most of the people think you killed their champion.

The fundamental Muslims have another card to play at their discretion - an assassination attempt on Musharaff which can be blamed on Bhutto's followers.- tom

Thanks, that's a great explanation/analysis. Checked your website and found this --
