Romney officials approved clinic loan - Worcester facility to provide abortions
Boston Globe ^ | 122907 | Frank Phillips

Former governor Mitt Romney's economic development agency granted initial approval to a tax-exempt bond last year for a Planned Parenthood clinic in Worcester that will provide abortions, just two months before he left office and began highlighting his antiabortion position as a presidential candidate.

Asked about the $5 million financial deal yesterday, the Romney campaign said the former governor was not aware it was under consideration when Planned Parenthood won preliminary approval in November 2006.

Romney repeatedly used the power of his office while governor to advance socially conservative positions, including restricting stem cell research, pushing abstinence-only sex education in schools, and vetoing a bill to increase access to emergency contraception in hospitals.

In the case of the abortion clinic funding deal, the Republican candidate's spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Romney would have attempted to block it - if he had known about it.

"Mitt Romney is prolife," Fehrnstrom said. "He did not know about this loan. It was made by an agency that does not report to the governor. If it did, he would have told them not to do it."

In additon to providing abortion services, the 10,000-square-foot Planned Parenthood clinic planned for Worcester will offer Plan B emergency contraception, also known as the "morning after pill," which also is opposed by antiabortion advocates.

Jeffrey M. Berry, a political science professor at Tufts University, said he was surprised that Romney and his aides did not catch such a politically sensitive financial deal making its way through his economic development agency.

Both hit pieces on Romney are from Ken Maquire and Frank Phillips who cover the gay and lesbian issues, but Romney folks are not allowed to bring this to attention

Oh, come on, stop with the boohoo stuff. WHO says Romney folks aren't allowed to bring this to attention? Please post specifics.

If the information is not true, why doesn't Romney say so?

Just because some pervs report facts doesn't make them lies. If they ARE lies, why isn't Romney getting out there and saying so? Is that how to run a campaign?

Distracting from uncomfortable facts is no way to serve one's candidate.

After Planned Parenthood was rebuffed at front-door attempts to build bigger, newer facilities across the country, they probably hid the purpose of the building behind third parties whose names actually went on the applications. This was true in Colorado and Texas, at least, where PP was discovered to be building abortuaries only after it became obvious what was being built.

I’m inclined to give Romney a pass on this one even though I am skeptical that Romney is as “born-again” conservative as he preens himself to be.

Planned Parenthood is certainly not above lying in order to get whatever it wants and that could be the case here.

Whatever. This is Massachusetts, home of “Fisting for Third-Graders”.

Regardless of any of these reports, it is inescapable that Massachusetts, the same state that routinely re-elects the likes of Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Barney Frank, Edward Markey, and Bill Delahunt and hasn’t sent a Republican to Washington DC in over a decade, elected Mitt Romney.

That’s all anybody really needs to know about Romney.

The Legislation that created Romney’s socialist health care system in Mass. has a position on the program’s board of advisors reserved for planned parenthood. I’m sure Saint Romney just missed this small detail, because he was so busy reading Ronald Regan’s biography.

(The same one he publicly spat on while running for Senate).

FTA:

I wish these lame articles would not be posted. I am a Fred supporter, but this kind of attack article doesn't impress me, or diminish Romney's social conservatism.

OK, so what part of "left office in January 2007" is part of the evil liberal spin?

That Romney fanatics aren't even aware of simple facts, yet they spout cliches and insult when confronted with facts instead of reasonable discussion, says quite a bit about them.

Ronald Reagan could show up supporting Mitt and he would get trashed. His son, Micheal Reagan, a well know conservative radio talk show host, even came out in support of Mitt.

Yeah, you guys are great with your attacks. Some guy who works 10 grades below Romeney does something, and you run a Democrat article attacking Mitt for the crime. You are very lame.

As a lifelong resident of Massachusetts, I can't say it any better than that.

This state that worships the Kennedys elected Romney.

I guess that means he's a conservative! (????)

My attack consisted of reporting the date he left office.

I have not blamed him for what is reported in this piece. I have merely pointed out facts.

That Romney people think reporting facts is an attack is very telling.
