TITLE: "Substance."
LENGTH: 30 seconds.
AIRING: Iowa.
SCRIPT: Fred Thompson: I'm Fred Thompson and I approve this message."
Announcer voiceover: "The Wall Street Journal says Fred Thompson's tax cut plan 'leads the GOP field.' A leading economic group calls it a plan 'conservatives can rally around.' The conservative National Review says only Thompson has outlined 'specific, conservative policies' on immigration. Investor's Daily says Thompson's national security plan features a 'Reaganesque rebuilding of our military.' And the National Right to Life Committee endorsed him because they know he can win. Fred Thompson. The clear conservative choice."
KEY IMAGES: The ad opens with Thompson addressing the camera. He's wearing a dark suit jacket and open-neck blue shirt and appears to be seated in a busy restaurant. From there images quickly flash across the screen often two or three at once on separate panels of Thompson speaking vigorously to an audience, clenched fists in the air; an aerial shot of Thompson in the midst of a crowd of supporters; Thompson waiving to a friendly audience as he walks to a podium; Thompson greeting a crowd of supporters holding blue and white "Fred Thompson" signs, Thompson greeting what appears to be a group of veterans with a large American flag in the background, and ending with a young girl holding a Thompson sign. As images flash onto one panel, quotes from publications mentioned in the voiceover quickly appear and then disappear from another panel.
ANALYSIS: The ad hits five key issues for conservative voters: taxes, immigration, national security, abortion and electability. Thompson seeks to portray himself in the ad, as he has in others, as a candidate with a consistently conservative record who is also electable. The ad ignores inconsistencies in Thompson's record on some of these same issues, such has his lobbying work for an abortion rights group. The ad supports Thompson's conservative record with partial quotes that lack context. Thompson's effort to portray himself as a consistent conservative shows the weaknesses he hopes to exploit among his Republican chief rivals Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani all of whom have had to defend positions frowned upon by conservatives.
Analysis by Associated Press Writer Joan Lowy
I tend to like Thompson. However he is slow out of the gate and seems to be getting less Press than the rest. The MSM has picked their candidates.
That is the impression one would get if one relied on the MSM, instead of the people actually in Iowa.
I have NEVER given money to a politician, but I went to fred08.com clicked on “donate” and have repeatedly given mney now by giving my credit card number.
The FR has defeated the MSM several times -— once spectacularly with Buckhead and Dan Rather.
No reason not to do it again.
“Thompson waiving to a friendly audience”
Good grief, can’t AP writers even spell anymore?
If you dig deep enough and go far enough back, everyone has inconsistencies. Why would this writer expect Fred's ad point that out? Stupid comment, I guess the writer just had to get some kind of hit in on Fred.
PAJAMA POWER! GO FRED!
The MSM (including this author Lowry) definitely is condescending to Fred but they are slowly learning how to spell his name as they are being FORCED to write more about him. This will increase after his good showing in Iowa, I HOPE and PRAY.
Contributed yesterday - what’s the total amount raised?
$246,720, as of a few seconds ago.
Great oration such as yours made me give another $50.
246K and change. He needs about 2K more in the next 30 min. according to the website.
I've thrown my bit in. I'll do more in the days to come.
Thank you for your help!
(No, not connected with Fred. Just a concerned citizen.)
Fred is rising at the time when he needs to. The MSM doesn’t want Fred because he is a real threat.
