ORLANDO, FLA. -- With about 150 supporters crowded around a podium set up on the tarmac of Orlando Executive airport (and about 20 Ron Paul supporters waving signs outside) Mike Huckabee strode out to the strains of Right Now by Van Halen and immediately addressed the Bhutto situation, expressing our sincere concern and apologies for what has happened in Pakistan.
He said the assassination is a reminder that here in the US, we are lucky to vote not with bullets but with ballots, and said I guess we are sometimes lulled into failing to appreciate the magnitude of the democratic process.
After moving onto other subjects in his rally (more on that in a moment) he took questions from the press. I asked him what he would do right now if he were President to tackle the situation. He avoided taking a strong policy position, saying he would offer sincere sympathies to the people of Pakistan, and monitor whos behind it. When asked what he thinks of the Musharraf government and how it has handled the security situation and aid from the US, he replied, I think today is not the best day to comment on what the Musharraf government should or shouldnt have done though we need a full accounting of that money. He was also asked if todays news highlights why the next President needs to have foreign policy, which he lacks. His reponse: I think its more important to have the right principles for the American people.
He made a bad choice of words when saying the U.S. needs to consider what impact does it have on whether or not theres going to be martial law continuing in Pakistan. He should have said whether or not martial law will be reinstated it was lifted nearly two weeks ago. A minor slip, maybe, but not a subject he wants to mess up on when he is already considered weak in the area of foreign policy.
VERY SMART! :)
This guy is smart!... He knows that one wrong answer and he will burned alive...and quickly! :)
In a word, NO! This is nonsense.
Theyre not. An Apology is a explanation or excuse or justification , and sorry is an expression of sympathy and pity and sadness.
Not even close.
OK. SOmetimes you would say “I’m so sorry” when you hear bad news.
But that “sorry” isn’t an apology, even though “I’m sorry” is also used for an apology.
If he had said he was sorry to hear the news, that would be defensible.
On the other hand, I’m willing to believe that he simply used the wrong word “apologies”, and didn’t actually mean we were apologizing for anything.
A totally ridiculous comment on the day that Pakistan is thrown into political turmoil.
As am I. But it is a gaffe, and Huckabee needs to issue a statement to the effect that he used the wrong word. Because his original statement, as it stands, implies that he is speaking on behalf of a party responsible for the assassination.
Ok fine... if it seems ridiculous to you, then it is!... I see it differently though :)
I am not sure of the protocol, but I'm not sure if an Islamic country welcomes the prayers from the infidels.
Can you imagine the screaming and braying if President Bush had made a similar gaffe?
I realize that presidential candidates are exhausted from talking for hours and hours every day—BUT SPEAKING COHERENTLY AND CORRECTLY IS A MAJOR JOB REQUIREMENT FOR BEING POTUS. Clearly, Huckabee doesn’t meet the minimum job requirements. He makes daily verbal gaffes, some minor, some major. This one was major. I’m embarassed that an amateur like Huckabee is the “leading GOP candidate” for POTUS.
Oh, crap, he's running for "Commander in Grief". Will someone tell this simpleton that we already lived through 8 years of such a policy, and lower Manhattan has a giant hole to prove how effective THAT was.
I agree with that, he should clarify what he meant, unless he really meant he thought it was our fault she was killed, in which case he should just drop out now.
I’d cut him just a tad bit of slack here. I think he meant “condolences” but just got hung up on choosing le mot juste. He meant condolences, probably doesn’t really quite know what “apology” means—he might have meant “defense,” as in an apologia. Yes, that’s it; poor fellow was thinking in Greek, dontcha know. Why when you have a degree in theology and, what was it, three whole years of New Testament Greek, why, the word apologia just sorta tumbles right outta yer mouth before you can catch it and put it in its place.
Where’s the /sarc tag?
What, me sarcastic? Whatever gave you that idea? Is that a Greek word? Did you mean sarx? Huckabee lost his sarx, more than 100 pounds of it, years ago.
But, since insist, I apologize abstrusely for my ebullient failure to include a sarc libel on post no. 92.
And that’s not sarcastic. It’s abject humbility and groveling missing demeanor for my culpable error.
Sorry, I apologize scabrously for my error in my apologia. I meant, “since you insist,” but somehow words failed me again.
She sees Obama as the best baby sitter for the nursery.
That would make the Huckster the 16 year old who wants to be cool and friends with the kids, but has no idea what they really need.
Meanwhile, the adults (Rudy, McCain, Mitt) are so busy arguing about their theories of child rearing, they cannot see that the child molesters (Hillary and the Silky Pony) are already in the room waiting to pounce.
The remaining two adults, Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson, are trying to warn them but cannot be heard above the noise.
It is rather obvious that Huckachuck meant to use the word condolences and instead came out with apologies. He could probably get a pass on that except for the fact that the rest of his statement was really lame! Sounds as if he just kinda made it up out of thin air. Just shows that if he is elected we will be in for at least four more years of what was said about Clinton, “Bill’s foreign policy is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get!” With the dangers we are facing, are we really wanting to turn over the reigns of government to that?
“Fred Thompson, are trying to warn them but cannot be heard above the noise”
of the red pickup?
