So, what - precisely - is “manuka” honey, and where do we get it?

But... but... my local tree-huggers and paranoid late-night radio listeners swear there’s not a honey-bee hive left populated in the USA anymore.

A beehive is the most sterile place in the animal kingdom.

Amid growing concern over drug-resistant superbugs and nonhealing wounds that endanger diabetes patients, nature's original antibiotic — honey — is making a comeback.

The irony of coating diabetes patients in honey.

Can I stop using toothpaste and just swish some honey before bedtime?

Sure, but how does it taste on toast?

They could revise those old "Nut and Honey" ads from the 80s:

Patient: "So doctor what do you prescribe?"
Doctor: "Nut and Honey."

Be careful with honey and babies.

IIRC, it can carry botulism, not in a form that’s harmful to adults, but babies in particular are more at risk.

I am believing more and more in the benefits of natural remedies medicine and less and less in the benefits of big pharma/OTC medicines.

My son had head lice in November. The pesticides recommended by the pharmacist did not eradicate them. Do you know what worked?

Crisco shortening, vinegar and tea tree oil.

I will second guess any doctor/pharmco recommended treatment from here on out.

No thanks to manukahoney.com, I found out that manuka is a flower in NZ. The AP does infomercials now? The website reads just like the AP item.

Almost 40 years ago, my sister got a book from the library about the healing properties of honey. I believe any honey can do for infections on cuts.

Honey is so packed with sugar and complex sugar strings, that it sucks the water out of any bacteria that it touches and kills them. That is the physical explanation for honey’s anti-bacterial properties.

Basically any natural honey will do. Some manufactured non-natural honeys do not have the same mix of complex sugars and do not work the same. So natural bee-made honey is the way to go.

One thing I have read is that it is NOT effective against Staph bacterias (unlike what is written in the article - this has been proven by medical studies.)

One more thing is that honey sometimes carries a small parasite that is dangerous to babies since their immune systems can’t fight it off. So kids under two should not be given honey.

Otherwise, honey is a very good anti-bacterial agent.

I have a friend that says that bees secrete a natural anti-biotic into the comb to keep the hive free from infection. Takes some sort of pill with the stuff that he swears by.

From the movie "The 13th Warrior"

Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: [as Herger offers a mead horn] I can taste neither the fermentation of grape, nor of wheat.
[Herger laughs]
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: What? Why do you laugh?
Herger the Joyous: [laughing, and handing over the bottle] HONEY! It's made from honey!

A couple of years ago when I complained to my doctor about getting yet another prescription for seasonal allergy problems he suggested that I try drinking tea a couple of times a day sweetened with locally produced honey. The heory being that the bees would have made the honey out of the same types of pollens that are in the air bothering me. I tried it and it seemed to work. I bought honey at our local farmers market that was locally produced and it worked wonders. Couldn’t find any local honey this year so I bought some from the Shenandoah Valley and it worked fine.
