NBC says some find bookcase and Christmas lights offensive Candidate wishing voters Merry Christmas upsets some folks |

The latest effort to spread the idea that religion has no place in the public square comes as a response to a TV spot produced by presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. I urge you to watch the two video clips I have placed in this e-mail. First, is the ad by former Governor Huckabee wishing people a Merry Christmas. Click here to watch the 30-second ad. Next, is a clip from the Today Show (Dec. 18), hosted by Meredith Vieira, on which Governor Huckabee was a guest. Vieira opens the interview talking about how some say the ad is sending an overt religious appeal to voters. Some have become so openly hostile to the Christian faith that they are upset when a candidate simply wishes viewers Merry Christmas and mentions that --after all-- Christmas is the day Christians celebrate the birth of Christ. The governor is accused of putting a cross in the background of his ad. The 'cross' they find offensive is nothing more than a bookcase. The critics say also that three lights stand for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! What is disappointing is that the media grabs such a concoction and makes big news out of this ad. To me, these accusations are utterly silly, and biased. Watch the clip from the Today Show. There are those who feel that nothing religious, especially wishing people Merry Christmas, should be made by anyone seeking public office. That is the attitude of those who want to drive religion from the public square.

I’m not a member of the grammar police but around my house we capitalize and spell it Christmas. Ok, ok... back to the preacher...
“one Christian who WILL NOT vote for him”
As the rooster crows... OK what ever three times
For it is written,I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE.
Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness... I Cor. 1:18-23 (NASB)
This kept running through my head while reading the comments.
Huckabee has surged because he won a couple of debates and hes got evangelical support. If a quick rise can happen to the liberal pro-life evangelical Huckster, it can happen to the conservative pro-life evangelical Hunter.

According to Intrade, the winner of the December 12th GOP debate was... Duncan Hunter.

Funny, when I read the comments of folks who seem to want to elect this guy president because he is a Baptist Minister, something about "My kingdom is not of this world" runs through my head.
He is pandering to believers.
Probably most who might be offended wouldn’t vote Republican anyway; hack ‘em off any way you can.
The preachers I saw at church last night had a real cross right on their vestments. They didn't clear a bookshelf and get cute about it.
So Huck is being neither like a preacher nor President.
I don’t find the cross/empty book case to be offensive. I find Huck trying to pass himself off as a conservative, well, not offensive, I guess, just a bit annoying.
If I were an “Evangelical” by outofstyle (My Ride’s Here)by Mormon fear mongering I would pander to me “Huck” by invoking Christ’s name. If I were an “Evangelical” in iowa.
K had a bit of fun /sarc on
I believe Meredith has more class than to kiss your sorry ass.
Anyone who designs sets for a living knows that you don’t let the background take prominence over the subject. That ‘bookcase/cross’ GLEAMS next to huckabee’s face.
The New Journalism (like the New Math) is as follows:
"Some" = "NBC" = Journalist + Editor + Spouse/Partner/Friend/Hairdresser/Neighbor/Guy who brings the coffee and donuts each morning.

“Coleus, I disagree with the article. The ad would have been fine, even great, if not for the fact that it was run by a candidate for President using religion as a political tool.”
EXACTLY.
P1ss on the left. No one forced them to come to what was once a Christian Nation.
They can go to Cuba where they won’t be offended.

Faith and Politics
The First Amendment requires that expressions of faith be neither prohibited nor preferred.
My faith is my life - it defines me. I don’t separate my faith from my personal and professional lives.
Real faith makes us more humble and mindful, not of the faults of others, but of our own. It makes us less judgmental, as we see others with the same frailties we have.
Faith gives us strength in the face of injustice and motivates us to do our best for “the least of us.”
Our nation was birthed in a spirit of faith - not a prescriptive faith telling us how or whether to believe, but acknowledging a providence that pervades our world.
The First Amendment requires that expressions of faith be neither prohibited nor preferred. We should not banish religion from the public square, but should guarantee access to all voices and views. We should share and debate our faith, but never seek to impose it. When discussing faith and politics, we should honor the “candid” in candidate - I have much more respect for an honest atheist than a disingenuous believer.
My faith is my life - it defines me. My faith doesn’t influence my decisions, it drives them. For example, when it comes to the environment, I believe in being a good steward of the earth. I don’t separate my faith from my personal and professional lives.

Way to go Huckabee! Stand up for what is right. You have already recieved my wife and my votes in Michigan last week with our absentee ballot! God Bless!
looks like a big “plus” sign to me.
You may be right, but to the rest of us Xmas = Mass for the Unknown. We like to keep Christ in Christmas.
