KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Defence Minister Peter MacKay touched down at Kandahar Airfield to spend Christmas with the troops.
Accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Rick Hillier, and the U.S. ambassador to Canada, the trio spent the better part of the past two days hopping between bases dishing out festive fare.
On hand for the grand Christmas Day dinner at Kandahar Airfield, MacKay expressed his gratitude to the Van Doos in particular.
Calling them the pride of both Quebec and Canada, MacKay said Canadians across the country have a great respect, affection and appreciation for the work they're doing.
After welcoming the troops province by province, Hillier expressed his pride for the work the troops are doing and assured Canadians generally are supportive of the mission.
This being the bloodiest year for Canadian troops, Hillier told reporters his soldiers believe in the mission and are committed to helping build the Afghan army and police force so it eventually look after its own affairs.
