Someone's killing country music stars

K-Paz de la Sierra

They sing of romance, lost love, violence, drug smuggling and cartel hitmen, and now, for some of Mexico's country music stars, their art has brutally forced itself into their lives.

In the past year and a half, 13 musicians – three since Dec. 1 – have been violently killed in attacks that bear the signs of Mexican underworld killings, reported Scotland on Sunday. None of the cases have been solved.

The motives for the murders are unknown and no evidence links them to a single killer. Love triangles, links to organized crime, reprisals for narcocorridos – ballads about drug dealers – that offended someone, and a slow drift into the criminal culture celebrated by their music have been suggested.

The murder of Sergio Gomez, founder and lead singer of K-Paz de la Sierra, early this month, doesn't fit any of the speculation, friends and family said.

He had been beaten, tortured and strangled to death.

Zayda Peña, vocalist for Zayda y Los Culpables, was recovering from a gunshot she received at a hotel several days before. It the earlier shooting, another woman and a hotel employee were killed. The assassins killed Peña with two shots to the face on the second attempt.

He had a plastic bag over his head and his hands and feet were tied.

Gee, these Mexican thugs have nothing on the mob.

At least the mob didn't normally kill women.

Dollars to donuts, it's extortion money not being paid.

The Spanish-language news indicated that Zayda’s death was related to a lesbian love triangle. Just sayin’ ...

The other cases strongly suggest drug/gang involvement.

I was standing in line at the grocery store, and the checkout girl was wiping down the conveyor belt with a paper towel. She said “Some guy just came through the line with a package of leaky meat.”

I almost fell over laughing.

That would make a good CW song.

Artist: Jackson Alan
Song: Murder On Music Row

Nobody saw them running
From 16th Avenue
They never found the fingerprints
Or the weapon that was used
But someone killed country music
Cut out its heart and soul
They got away with murder
Down on music row

The almight dollar
And the lust for worldwide fame
Slowly killed tradition
And for that, someone should hang ("Ahh, you tell 'em Alan")
They all say "Not Guilty!"
But the evidence will show
That murder was committed
Down on music row

For the steel guitars no longer cry
And the fiddles barely play
But drums and rock 'n' roll guitars
Are mixed up in your face
Ol' Hank wouldn't have a chance
On today's radio
Since they committed murder
Down on music row

They thought no one would miss it
Once it was dead and gone
They said no one would buy them ol'
Drinkin' and cheatin' songs ("Oh, but I still buy 'em")
Well there ain't no justice in it
And the hard facts are cold
Murder's been committed
Down on music row

For the steel guitars no longer cry
And you can't hear fiddles play
With drums and rock 'n' roll guitars
Mixed right up in your face
Why the Hag wouldn't have a chance
On today's radio
Since they committed murder
Down on music row

Why they even tell the Possum
To pack up and go back home
There's been an awful murder
Down on music row

Whoever it was who performed “Don’t mess with my toot toot,” and “Swangin” would be in serious trouble if they ever dared to enter the little piece of wilderness I call my target range.
