Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana... It may be Providential that a book of history is soon to be released dealing extensively with certain shameful events of nearly four decades ago, just as others are now seeking to shamelessly and eagerly repeat those events.
Scott Swett and Tim Ziegler have co-authored To Set The Record Straight with the apt subtitle How Swift Boat Veterans, POWs and the New Media Defeated John Kerry. The book all but begins with details of the Winter Soldier Investigation (WSI) of 1971, an event I wrote about here at American Thinker last October. The WSI, organized by the Vietnam Veterans Againt the War (VVAW) was pure anti-American and anti-soldier leftist political theater.
Owing to leading Senators and the monolithic liberal big media of the time, WSI was the primary catalyst in legitimizing the longstanding and widely accepted defamation of 2.9 million Americans who served in Vietnam as baby killers, rapists, war criminals, losers, misfits, drug abusers and psychological "time bombs", to use Makubin T. Owens terminology.
Those broad sweeping charges against the Vietnam vets have survived as a part of our established historical narritive for millions and has been all but enshrined in the arts community, particularly film.
The left side of the web is busy spreading the word that next March the ideological descendent of the VVAW, the Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) is planning another WSI dealing with Iraq and Afghanistan, thereby intending to smear another generation of over a million and a half Americans who have served to date in those wars and those who will serve.

Kerry committed perjury when he testified in front of the Fulbright Committee.
But no one seems to care.
Those who were directly involved with the Swift Boat phenom were unusually calm with all that fell upon them from the opposition. This included death threats, midnight phone calls from strangers, harrassment in newspaper opinion columns, untold letters of the not-so-kind or intelligent sort, rude disruptions of family weddings and gatherings, etc. Why? Because they were, are and will be in the right, and knew it. They had the courage to tell the truth, without a thought to their own discomfort but with a sense of duty, with only the good of our country in mind. John Kerry lies with his own self-interest only in his mind. The truth set the Swifties and all of us free from having John Kerry as an unfit Commander in Chief.
I’m so proud to have helped fund such a smashingly successful group of people as the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
I just love hearing the other side whine about it.
Tis music in my ears.
I’m with ya ‘Bay...The job won’t be over for me until I read of his miserable departure from this earth...
“Woo us, romance us, entice us, or alarm us. Somehow draw us in before asking us to read more than about three sentences.”
Is reading more than three sentences getting a bit too taxing for today’s “reader”? OK, how’s this? Now, let me muss up my hair and unbutton my top button before I write this.
Don’t you just adore the Swift Vets? Do you want to read (sigh) more? John Kerry is planning a HUGE comeback in the NEXT election cycle to try to (”try” being the operative word here) GASP, HAUNT them!
Now class, don’t forget to read “See Spot Run”.
Puhleese! Also, to LucyT, chuckle, no I am not a Democrat. (By the way, Democrat is spelled with a capital “D” in your instance.)
To pick something at random, here are the first couple of sentences of a book review of Richard Rhodes Arsenals of Folly. After these three sentences I know where the book fits in history, what is unique about the point of view and why I might be interested in reading it.
This is the third volume in a history of nuclear weaponry that began with the award-winning The Making of the Atomic Bomb, but despite its subtitle, this installment might also be described as a chronicle of the unmaking of the arms race. Paralleling the careers of Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan, Rhodes builds up to a detailed account of the 1986 Reykjavik summit, at which the two leadersboth eager to achieve peacenearly came to an agreement on eliminating their nuclear arsenals, before the accord, he says, was sabotaged by then-assistant secretary of defense Richard Perle.
Thanks, AJ
...and despite the back and forth, I took what you said seriously. If I do another piece, I’ll keep your comments in mind. You are not the first to allude to me using ten words when one will suffice! But then again, I’m not a professional writer.
Be well, AJ, and be on guard for next March. I think the folks behind this new WSI are making a big mistake, in thinking that this will be like 1971. It won’t be.

Oops! That last should be “To AndrewJackson”, not “Pythonic Cow”.
Twice over.
O tempora, o mores!
I think the dog ate my camera. Seriously, I just noticed it isn’t clipped to the screen! ;)
No truer words.....
“In fact, if you judge the actions of Murtha, Reid, McDermott and numerous entertainment celebrities it would seem that John and Jane succeeded in making treason fashionable.”
Only if you are a Democrat!!!!!
” This article may be about something, but hang me if I can tell what it is or why I should even bother reading it. “
Bravo! My sophomore HS composition teacher would be proud of you, as am I. You’ve got 25 words to convince me I need to read your piece. Go.
The VVAW operated without effective challenge in a sympathetic media environment, the Iraq Veterans Against the War don’t have that advantage. They will be called on their lies.
Like they said earlier about kerry lying before Congress.
If he wasn’t lying, the Navy should have brought him back on Active Duty and Court Martialed him for allowing the carnage to go on (that he witnessed etc).
But then again it is legal? for a cop to sit across the street from a bar and follow you for 2 blocks then pull you over for DUI....Seem’s to me there are 2 guilty parties here. The driver and the LAW ENFORCEMENT/PROTECTOR that allowed you to pull onto a highway and endanger others.
