Yoga instructor shocked by police for yelling at officer

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A police officer used a stun gun to zap a yoga instructor who yelled at her in a crowded department store, drawing questions about the non-lethal weapon's use.

Elizabeth Beeland, 35, went to a Daytona Beach Best Buy on Nov. 26 to purchase a CD player for her father. Her attorney said she stepped outside the store when she received an emergency call about her daughter, leaving her credit card behind.

A store clerk suspected Beeland was using a stolen card and called over Daytona Beach Police Officer Claudia Wright, who was investigating a separate call at the store.

When Wright approached Beeland, she became "verbally profane, abusive, loud and irate," Wright wrote in a report.

In a video posted on the Daytona Beach News-Journal Web site, Beeland is seen backing away and avoiding Wright before crumpling to the ground after being hit with the Taser's 50,000 volts.

She was then arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting a police officer without violence — both misdemeanors.

----

Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood defended his officer's actions and she was not punished in any way. Beeland was refusing an officer's orders, and if not for the Taser, the officer may have had to use other weapons.

Is this Freerepublic? What about giving the officer the benefit of the doubt.

Watch the video. The woman was not posing any threat to the officer, and was actually backing away from the officer, not running away, or trying to flee out the front of the store.

This was totally uncalled for. As a matter of fact, I too am getting a little sick of American citizens, that are not posing a physical threat being prodded and electrocuted like cattle.

There was other ways to handle this situation, like grabbing and cuffing her if the officer felt a crime was committed, even though I saw no crime committed on the video. Or was this officer not capable of that?

And the opinion of most of the people arguing with you, is that, based on the video, that particular LEO has no business being entrusted with a badge and a gun.

That is up to a Judge and a Jury

It is not up to fifty or a hundred people; that is mob rule.

After the lies a New England paper printed about me a year or so ago...

If the paper said you were trolling for controversy, I agree with the newspaper.

And they'll watch the same video we all did. Hope the jury awards her 100k for this unprovoked attack.

Glad you read so much out of it since you said "When she started waving her arms and backing away" in a post shortly there after.

There is no excuse for actions like this and if it's allowed to continue, will result in a cop eventually being shot.

Anarchy:

Absence of government; a state of lawlessness due to the absence or inefficiency of the supreme power; political disorder.

You might say that police such as officer Wright are guilty of promoting anarchy themselves.

I watched the video ,, unfortunately no audio ,,, I saw a woman taking a phone call and looking at her phone a few times , perhaps to check signal strength ,, the woman was then approached by an intimidating LEO who had the woman backing away from her abusive shouting in a serpentine/semi-circular pattern... she was not attempting to flee by any stretch of the imagination and before she was chased by the LEO she was not leaving the “greater” checkout area ,, tasing was clearly not “required” and would have never escalated to this without the officers agitation...

Nope, the cop already found her guilty! And is now going to create more charges.

Looks to me that the bimbo was running out the door.

She seems to be fleeing the LEO.

Not a smart thing to do.

Because cops suck and have been turning into freakin storm troopers in the last 15 years?

The State is NOT your friend. Don't ever make the mistake of thinking that.

“Beeland is seen backing away and avoiding Wright before crumpling to the ground after being hit with the Taser’s 50,000 volts.”

As much as I detest trial lawyers; there are times when a large lawsuit is a very good thing.
Geez you leave a credit card by accident and end up getting treated like a rabid dog.
Our Founding Fathers would not put up with crap like that for a millesecond...

I think it was G Gordon Liddy, who said, don’t get in a fight with a small man in prison. He’ll either kill you or you’ll be forced to kill him. Similar situation, eh?

Ah yes, always go along with the Gestapo.

The American revolutionaries did not make this country free by obeying the ruling authorities with guns. We will not restore that freedom by obeying today’s fascist bootjacks either.

Perhanps you consider the American revolutionaries anarchists.

Hank

The cop was probably an affirmative action hire. What a stupid bitch. I hope her house burns down at Christmas.

Breach of the peace; disorderly conduct.--Whoever commits such acts as are of a nature to corrupt the public morals, or outrage the sense of public decency, or affect the peace and quiet of persons who may witness them, or engages in brawling or fighting, or engages in such conduct as to constitute a breach of the peace or disorderly conduct, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

Sounds great. So when is that fat, stupid, affirmative action hire cop gonna get charged?

Be glad that cops are around to deal with the murderers, rapists, wife-beaters, child molesters, etc. so that you don’t have to...

Cops almost never prevent crimes. Remember, when seconds count, cops are only minutes away.
