$1 million is a good start. IMHO in this case it should be a lot higher.

He got $30k and his lawyers got $1 million?

You’re talking over 3,000 hours if it’s $300 an hour... I really would like to see reform that nails down these insane costs that are only supported by these deep pocket litigation cases.

A lousy mill? Usually we see nice fat numbers like $50 or $100 mill. What can you buy with that?
To: Mad_Tom_Rackham
Unfortunately, this will mean nothing to the Do Gooders.
They learn Nothing unless it is accompanied by death.. even then it’s a toss up.

He got $30k and his lawyers got $1 million? At some point a feudal society is going to look like a better alternative than the silly $hit coming out of the courts.

The culprit is 42 USC 1983, which provides for the recovery of attorneys fees to the prevailing party in a suit alleging a deprivation of federally secured rights. The idea behind that is noble (to ensure that the indigent can bring suit w/o paying a lawyer), but then results like this happen...
Not the court’s fault,though. It’s the statute’s.

Unfortunately, this will mean nothing to the Do Gooders.Of course not - - it's not their money. So what do they care?
To: Grn_Lantern
It’s usually the ACLU taking advantage of that little-known gold-mine.
That law needs to be changed.
But without it, do you think any lawyer would have taken his case, just for a chance to get a slice of the $30K he was awarded?

Did I read this correctly? The plaintiff won $30,000 and the legal fees were about $1,000,000. Something is wrong with this picture.

Yes, his lawyer, sir, had to WORK for HIS money.
To: SmithL
Beware of these policies that allow legal fees to be collected from tax payers in certain proceedings against government.
This code has spawned a cottage industry that does not provide a product or public good but simply litigates to exist because there is a large, unregulated, supply of tax money from which to draw.
