Romney's honesty problem (Mitt lied about his own mother's position on abortion?! 8/07)
Boston Globe ^ | August 9, 2007 | Joan Vennochi

MITT ROMNEY is determined to prove he's pro-life. How about proving he's pro-truth?

Every time Romney tries to explain his evolution from supporter to opponent of abortion rights, his honesty comes into question. That's because his explanations over the years don't add up.

In June 2005, former Globe columnist Eileen McNamara challenged Romney's assertion of his mother's pro-choice position. Two longtime Romney family friends and political supporters -- former governor William Milliken and former Republican National Committee co-chairwoman Elly Peterson -- told McNamara they could not recall Lenore Romney speaking out publicly for abortion. If she had, it would have represented a dramatic change of heart and break with the Mormon Church. Peterson, who worked on Lenore Romney's campaign, said, "If it happened, I'd remember it. It didn't and I don't." Milliken, who served as George Romney's lieutenant governor, also expressed skepticism.

True.

I must have forgotten that.

Since the DNC put me on their payroll, I’m kinda ticked that I can only be my normal bigoted, anti-Mormon self on the weekends when I’m not on the clock.

“If this man Romney gets the nomination, the Republican party will lose in Nov’08 and lose bigtime, as in lose even the veto power of the Senate with the votes to cut off filibustering.”

You know this exactly how? Your gut feeling or your unwillingness to vote for a Mormon extrapolated to the rest of us that don’t really care he is a Mormon.

Here is a clue for you: Politicians are elected to represent those that voted them in. When they do that you call them unprincipled. When they later run for a different office and they ascertain just what is it the majority that would support and vote for them wants and adjust their platform accordingly; you call them a flip flopper.

What crock.

Nothing new under the sun.

Just everyone keep in mind that metaphorical phrasings as a motivation for claimed outrage and a supposed guarantee of defeat fade to utter insignificance in comparison to leaking someone’s DUI records 2 days before an election, and seeing the target STILL win.

Romney remains the best candidate the GOP has in a year when the GOP has no money. He is the only one who can compete between September and November in the necessary media markets. He is the only one who can manage a 40ish state campaign organization victoriously.

You guys go ahead and do what you want, but be very careful that you don’t lay some sort of long term minefield that only blows up 9 months from now. Make sure you make your points about lying only in the present tense. Do not “plant seeds” in the public’s mind that only grow 10 months later. If you do that, you are working for Hillary.

The “scandal” that’s ridiculous

Mitt Romney has been drawing criticism for saying that he “saw” his father march with Martin Luther King, even though he did not witness the event. This strikes me as a non-story. It seems probable to me that Romney did not mean to say that he literally saw George Romney and Dr. King marching together. In that event, Romney likely would have said that he was with his father when he marched with King, or that he himself marched with King.

For what it’s worth, my father and I marched “with” King in the historic 1963 Washington event. (I can’t prove it though — my father is dead, my mother who “saw” us off that morning is dead, and I might have purchased my commemorative pin on EBay). I never say that I saw my father march with King because that would understate my participation.

In any case, the point Mitt Romney was making is that his father, a Mormon, had a stellar record on civil rights and participated in the civil rights activism of the early 1960s. That claim is incontestable. It’s a pity, moreover, that Romney would even have to address efforts to pin the formerly racist views of his religion on him.

Meanwhile, though, Jennifer Rubin, who criticized Mitt Romney (absurdly, I thought) for being insensitive to Jews when he kicked off his campaign at the Henry Ford museum, reports that Romney told the Boston Herald in 1978 that he and his father marched with Dr. King. The campaign admits that Mitt Romney never marched with King.

Even assuming that this 29 year-old report accurately quoted Romney, I would have thought that the statute of limitations period on misrepresenting one’s self to the press in 1978 has expired.

Rochelle, Petronski, and Ol’ Sparky (and a few others) can’t see the forest for the trees.

They and others see the truth -- which Myth Romney and his ilk cannot.

FACT 1: Romney can't even beat Hillary Clinton in .... Massachusetts which is his HOME STATE
and where he obtained by Governorship by trick.

FACT 2: Therefore Romney is THE choice of the DNC because he has NO (zero, zed, nada) chance.

James Carville: "It's a feel-good story, this Romney thing. Romney is an ascendant guy."

The Boston Globe [owned by the NYT} must be getting nervous about Mitt. Look for more attack articles. Mitt should wear it as a badge of honor.

“He staked his credentials on his mother, Lenore. He said she ran for the Senate in 1970 on an abortion-rights platform, inspired by the death of her son-in-law’s teenage sister from an illegal abortion. “My mother and my family have been committed to the belief that we can believe as we want, but we will not force our beliefs on others on that matter. And you will not see me wavering on that,” he said.

“After pondering stem-cell research, he walked away from his late mother’s alleged pro-choice commitment, as well as what was described as a painful memory of a relative who died from an illegal abortion.

He also walked away from the one explanation that makes sense. “He’s been a pro-life Mormon faking it as a pro-choice friendly,” Romney adviser Mike Murphy told the National Review in 2006.”

++ “That’s more than a mistake. That’s dishonest”. ++

Again with the re-runs. The writer’s strike has left the mitt-haters with no new scripts, so they are having to recycle the old disproven ones.

The fact that you state Mitt won MA “by trick” indicates that you believe that the ones he was tricking when he ran for Governor were liberal Democrats.

Wouldn’t that make him a fiscal and social conservative that was disguised as a social liberal but fiscal conservative?

If Romney were a RINO, he’d poll much better in Massachusetts than your graph would indicate.

He’s a solid conservative through-and-through, which is why his polling numbers are poor in Massachusetts.

Have a reality check. Take a breath.
That chart above is for Massachusetts.
Myth Romney has no chance — even there.

“She’s obviously a liberal with an ax to grind. Why anyone at FR would use an article written by a liberal is beyond me.”

It shouldn’t be beyond you. They just hate Romney. Ignore ‘em. They just do it to make us mad, the way a six-year-old harrasses his sister. It’s best to let the children play by themselves.

FACT 1: Romney can't even beat Hillary Clinton in .... Massachusetts which is his HOME STATE

Since 1960, MA has gone Rep twice, 1980 by 0.15% and in 1984 by 2.79%. Bush lost by 27% and 25%. There are no Reps in the MA Congressional delegation. The governor is a Dem. The composition of the state legislature: 140 Dems/19 Reps in the House and 35 Dems/5 Reps in the Senate. The fact that Romney can't beat Hillary is no surprise in what amounts to be a one party state. The surprise is that Mitt ever got elected to the governorship. Do you think Giuliani will beat Hillary in NY?

and where he obtained by Governorship in trick.

LOL. And what was the "trick" this "wascally Rep" used to get all of those Dems in the bluest state in America to vote for him? LOL. Maybe it will work nationally.

LET Myth Romney speak for himself.

THE PROPAGANDA:

THE REAL DEAL:

"Look, I was an Independent during the time of Reagan/Bush.
I am not trying to return to Reagan/Bush."

(Mitt Romney, 1994 Senate Debate, Boston, MA, 10/25/94)

"I wasn't a Ronald Reagan conservative."
(Mitt Romney In Interview with Marc Ambinder,
"Romney Explains Himself," National Journal, 2/9/07)

"I'm very clear I think, to the people across the Commonwealth -
my "R" didn't stand so much for Republican as it does for reform.
"
(Romney Video, accessed 9/19/07)

"I'm not running as the Republican view or a continuation of Republican values.
That's not what brings me to the race.
"
(Romney Video, accessed 9/19/07)
