Blood-splotches on walls, chains hanging from a ceiling and swords on the killing floor — the artifacts left a disturbing tale of brutalities inside a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq torture chamber. But there was yet another chilling fact outside the dirt-floor dungeon. Villagers say they knew about the torment but were too intimidated by extremists to tell authorities until now.

KEYWORDS: iraq; threadnumber5; torture
Stories such as these — claims of insurgent abuses and the silence of frightened Iraqis — have emerged with increasing frequency and clarity recently as U.S.-led forces push deeper into former extremist fiefdoms and forge alliances with tribes seeking to reclaim their regions.

It sounds like he accusing the US of lying.

Yes, but was there any sign of women's underwear being used on the victim's heads?

No?

OK then - no big deal...

Nothing to see here - move on..

Yeah, its not like Al Qaeda was waterboarding people. This is hardly even worth mentioning as torture.

Actually, I’m getting the opposite vibe from it. It seems like the author is horrified. Reminiscent of the horrors GIs encountered when they go to areas that the Nazis had occupied before their retreat in the closing days of WWII.

The author attributes the torture to Al-Queda. I’m not seeing any spinning on what the Iraqis are claiming.

I don't get that at all from the article. He may be about 3-4 years late in reporting it, but it sounds like a straight story.

I don't know... Maybe it is just that I don't trust anyone in the MSM... There is just an undercurrent... The bit about "...with increasing clarity..." sounds almost, almost like he is implying the reports are being made up?

Also, the bit about the tribes seeking to regain their lost lands. Does that paint us as the liberators (yeah!) or call into question their motives? Hmmm... I guess my knee-jerk reaction is to look for any kind of anti-Bush, anti-administration, anti-military slant/slur from the MSM. Their reputation is so soiled (IMHO) that it'd take years, years of straight-up reporting to begin to repair it.

I take it to mean the tribes lost control of their territory to Al Qaeda (which is true), and now they are taking it back with US help.

You’re right about the Left Stream Media, but there are some good reporters out there. I applaud them for getting the story straight, but I don’t expect it will get wide coverage.
