MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY
Thu Dec 20 2007 10:56:57 ET
Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!
McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.
The paper's Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain's aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.
MORE
The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.
The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.
Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks.
Rutenberg had hoped to break the story before the Christmas holiday, sources reveal, but editor Keller expressed serious reservations about jounalism ethics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election.
McCain campaign officials Rick Davis, Charlie Black and Mark Salter are also said to have met with the NEW YORK TIMES in an effort to halt publication.

Ms Coor’s heiress?
I think McCain is a personally despicable individual with a despicable track record in COngress.
He’s in the wrong party.
Maybe he and Libermann should go out and start a new party - the Social Leftists for the War on Terror Party.
Thanks for updating.
yeah, what he said.
Its funny that some reporters were trying to slam this story out their before primaries to effect the results, and the editor pulls it back because of concerns.
Reporters can be narcissistic, attention-seeking, un-controlled vermin. Maybe the editor had a flashback of that one freak they had making up stories. Or as Dan Rather said, he believes in the essence of the story, regardless of the facts, or something like that.
“We need more information to determine the innocence or guilt of this woman...”
More information... like a photo? ;-)

But all the senators allow lobbyists to come in an pitch their ideas, Boeing, the agriculture groups, defense industry,. and if it resonates with the senators home state, whats the big deal if it helps that state? It happens all the time. The issue is if that senator personally unduly enriches himself, like Duke Cunningham. Are we saying that McCain’s issues with lobbyists have resulted in him gaining some bucks from it?
duh...
Dude, post #70. ROFL
Well, I’m LOL at Drudge because I don’t believe for one minute that any Republican could get the N.Y. Slimes to spike a story, especially not one who helped write the Telecom bill (which incidentally was pulled by Reid and the RATS they were so scared that it would pass). If you’ll remember the Telecom bill was going to give us cable and direct T.V. consumers a choice about which stations we got piped down to us (but thanks to Reid and Dodd we still have to pay for the crap we don’t want. So I hope you two enjoy Bill Moyers Reports, Bill Mahr, oh, and all those ballets on PBS that McCain tried to give you a choice about paying for...
And then there is McCain’s hatred for the 1st AMENDMENT. Anyone surprised?
Yes.
Search Keating 5 for more information.
I'm on the same page as you. IIRC, the original story about the supposed sex scandal also claimed that journalists were sitting on the story out of ethical concerns about publishing it during an election. Same as this story. I've been wondering when/if we'd ever find out what that original story was about. Maybe we're about to.

“I have not had been in talks with The New York Times. They’ve been communicating with our staff and with us,” McCain said. “I’ve never done any favors for anybodylobbyist or special interest groupthat’s a clear, 24-year record.”
He should have let the story run. It looks even worse now.
What the story right now ROFL
It going be good
“Well, if this story is yet another expose about McCain as a known enemy of the First Amendment,...”
I think that given his record with campaign finance reform, that is an angle that might be played. I’m not sure that it’s entirely fair, but he brought it upon himself.
I think that the biggest bang in this potential scandal may lurk in this sentence:
“The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.”
If it turns out that this is the sex scandal to which the Los Angeles Times has previously alluded, I think it will be lights-out for Sen. McCain’s presidential campaign.

Thanks.
If you or someone hasn’t already done so, you should post that as a separate thread.

I have a feeling she looks "not guilty" but i want to see if myself....
Since it’s the liberal’s favorite Republican?
Yes, the heiress.
McCain dumped his wife - who stayed loyal while he was a POW - after she became disabled. He ran off with the heiress who had a nasty drug habit. She was charged with stealing drugs from Red Cross packages but her family’s $$$$ got her off with a reduced sentence.
I’d love to hear stories from his first wife.
