Im mother and father to my kids and I do a great job, if I do say so myself. So Im told constantly, so it seems. :) Dad is a bipolar alcoholic, Ive raised the kids well in spite of him.
Good for you. I'm working on that with my 2 Sons as well. However, let me toss a hypothetical scenario toward you and get your opinion:
What if he claimed to the courts that it was you who drove him into alcoholism? What if the courts sided with him, and made you pay for him to get on his feet again, kick the bottle away, and start getting a well-paying job, on your dime? Regardless of what actually may or may not have happened, they take HIS side.
I've heard of this happening before. Thankfully, some counties are changing more toward the equalization of their rulings in these matters. Albeit, very slowly.

It’s hard to imagine, since he’d had some run ins before we met. but ...i believe in rehabilitative alimony. If I had money and he had stayed home with the kids, I say yeah, I’d give it to him.
