I’m mother and father to my kids and I do a great job, if I do say so myself. So I’m told constantly, so it seems. :)
Dad is a bipolar alcoholic, I’ve raised the kids well in spite of him.

Good for you. I'm working on that with my 2 Sons as well. However, let me toss a hypothetical scenario toward you and get your opinion:
What if he claimed to the courts that it was you who drove him into alcoholism? What if the courts sided with him, and made you pay for him to get on his feet again, kick the bottle away, and start getting a well-paying job, on your dime? Regardless of what actually may or may not have happened, they take HIS side.

I've heard of this happening before. Thankfully, some counties are changing more toward the equalization of their rulings in these matters. Albeit, very slowly.

Congratulations. It can be done, and it is done, often.

I think we all agree Mom/Dad is better, but if there’s only Mom or Dad, it can work and the kids will turn out OK.

The key is discipline and love.

I raised mine to be a productive conservative without a Dad, and my cousin’s wife raised three boys to be the same(my cousin died of alcoholism-poisoning).
