Castro's Long Fade
IBD ^ | December 18, 2007

Tyranny: After five decades of absolute power, we're now supposed to believe Cuban dictator Fidel Castro intends to meekly relinquish the reins to the younger set? Over Castro's dead body.

A mysterious letter purportedly from the missing Cuban dictator stressed that Castro, 81, didn't intend to cling to power much longer. "My elemental duty is not to hold on to positions and less to obstruct the path of younger people," it said.

After 49 years of ruling without an election, followed by a year and a half of terminal illness, this sounds more like the fluttering of circling vultures than any real effort to pass the baton to Cuba's next generation. The last thing in the world Castro wants is for Cuba to become a democracy.

Let's say here what's on many minds: Castro may already be dead. If he is, Cuban officials are probably hiding it as they jockey for position. Whoever put out the statement — making Castro look all magnanimous — probably realizes it's getting harder to hide a dead body as months go by. Meantime, the letter opens the door for a power grab by the next would-be dictator seeking to succeed him.

Castro hasn't been heard from except in communiques, and he hasn't had any visitors in months. The only person who claims to be in touch with him is his protege, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez.

Given the right leadership Cuba has a huge potential. Castro denied any one but himself to make a financial profit. Most Cubans with business sense fled the country year ago. Hopefully the next leader will let business flourish and avoid the obvious corrupt means that is available to them.

Apparently, busy elsewhere.

This miscreant (Fidel) is getting many more sunrises than he has ever deserved. Then again, his sunrises in Hell will not be so pleasant.

This is getting good.

It's like "Weekend at Bernie's Fidel's"

All they need is a pair of sunglasses and a bit of work to pull it off.

HE'S BEEN DEAD FOR MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing going on now is a power struggle to determine who gets to exploit the Cuban people for wealth. When a "winner" emerges than Castro will finally "die".

Chubby also stays in touch with Eleanore Roosevelt, Hitler, Elvis and Obama.

I’m still convinced the end is inevitable. After Fidel and Raoul, there just isn’t anyone who believes in The Revolucion enough to kill and die for it. It’s gonna go out with a whimper not a bang.

>>He will die one day<<

Yup.

>>and then things will change.<<

We’ll see. If you’re a right wing sleazeball kleptocrat, you’ve gotta steal quick. You will be out of office in a couple of years. However, commie sleazeball kleptocrats can last forever. Could be that Raulito and his compadres have already been running the place for a decade.
